Asalaamu aleikoum,

Just a quickie.  The title "sheikh" (sorry if that's not spelt right).  It seems to be applied to various people.  When and how does one earn the right to use it?

I have heard stories of brothers referring to another as "Sheikh So-and-so" prior to Br. So-and-so giving a talk and the first thing that So-and-so says in his talk is "I am not a Sheikh".

So, what's the deal?

Salaam

Sheikh in arabic originally means "old man".
It also describes the status of a scholar,if he is known for his intense studying in any field of religion.
Also it is used for the imam of s masjid.
Last it is used in some gulf countries to refer to their amir or prince, because the traditions of the bedouins require the eldest and wisest(sometimes the wealthiest or strongest) in the tribe to be called the "sheikh of the tribe".

Sheikh is anybody who has a grey beard...even if he's young *s*
Eg imam malik was called sheikh when he was young because he had a grey beard
