Imagine if you will that the TV camera is pointed at you and you have 30 seconds to deliver a message that will be viewed by the entire world.  What would you say?

assalaamu alaikum

30 seconds hmmmm.....

Timeline:
---------
1-5 secs - big grin to the cameras

5-7 secs - replace grin with frown

7-27 secs - hold my breath make my face go as red as possible

27-30 secs - deliver the message

!!!AMERICA IS THE GREAT SATAN!!!

Just kidding... i think 30 seconds is too short a time to deliver a meaningful message that has been concocted by myself. So i'd settle for either reciting al-Fatihah or the Khutbatul-Haajah in English.

I guess i'd deliver the most important message of all ... Tawheed ... emphasise that all the prophets came with this message ... give a graphical image of hell and heaven and try to give some sort of comparison to a real life event ... mention that the act of Muslims does not necessarily reflect Islam, that the religion is perfect but not all followers are ... end by saying all i did was give a message and it's up to you [the listener] to do as u please with the information ...

don't worry, i'ma fast talker so i can fit that all in with time to spare :)

Muslima, so far you have given the best answer I have heard, I just don't see how you could do that in 30 seconds. :)

You don't think i can fit that all in 30 secs? lol .. ok then sir, here is what i would say, word for word ...

"Yes you guessed it, i am a Muslim and the fundamental belief of Islam is to worship one true God, the same message ALL the Prophets came with ... when u die you will spend ur eternal place in either heaven or hell ... just imagine being in either the most blissful of islands or standing in the middle of a forest fire, which would u prefer?? Don't look to the followers of Islam, look to the religion, as we are human and have flaws, the religion does not ... i have informed you with the true religion, what u do from here on out is ur prerogative"

So, how did i go? :)

That's pretty good.  The reason I asked this question (the 30 seconds), is because many times we are asked to explain Islam to a non-Muslim and we have a very short time to do it, so this was a way to see how prepared we really are.

Anyone else want to give it a try?

Assalamu alaikum,

First of all, I think it's absolutely impossible to give any kind of information in 30 seconds, especially about a complete way of life!  What I would do would be to spark interest in the listener's mind by saying things that would shake up his conscience and make him think.  I would, at the end, give him a pointer or two where he can go to obtain more info, and leave the rest of the search for him to carry out.

Just my two cents.

Wassalam.

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

Br. Arsalan see that sounds really nice, but actually doing it, thinking on your feet like that, is so difficult.  And you usually get no more than 30 seconds on the air in reality.

At the rally for Palestine in NYC, I was interviewed a couple times and so was lightningatnite.

It feels like it's 90 degrees out, people are marching and screaming around you, waving pictures of this dead child and you have a mike in your face a camera aimed at you and you're asked:
"So who do you think is responsible for this massacre?  Who do you blame fo these people's deaths? How do you feel about the Israelis?"

This boy knew what he was doing.  Those were loaded questions and he was baiting me.  He wanted me to get angry, look like I wanted revenge.  I could have said the Jews are responsible for these peoples death, can't wait for them to get what they deserve etc.  But what would that sound like to the American public, who are sympathetic to the Jewish community and know jack about ours?

I learned that you should talk in soundbytes.  Make a short statement that they can't cut, otherwise they'll edit what you say and it'll sound like whatever they want it to sound.

I said, "I am not Palestinian.  That's not why I'm here.  I am Muslim, and I've been taught that we should stand up for justice whenever there is any injustice in the world.  I saw these pictures last night, and I couldn't just stay home.  We should be doing something about this.  It's clear who's in the wrong here.  Why aren't there more people here demanding justice be done?  Where are you?  Learn what's going on and stand up for what's right."

Something like that.

I have so much respect now for Muslim public figures like Br. Ibraheem Hooper who talk to the media.  You have such opportunity in front of the camera but it is so easy to make a mistake.  We need to learn how to sound articulate, intelligent, and polite.  It is so important that Muslims learn public speaking skills!!!  Learn how to defend and stand up for this deen!  Equip yourself for the intellectual jihad!  Represent!

every muslim if they had that chance would loveto deliver the message of islam, that is the first thing that comes to a muslims mind...
i agree with bro Arsalan
i dont think anyone can explain anything in a short period..
u can say as much as u like about islam in a short time (or long) that does not mean anybody will really listen with an open mind or reveice guidance...
to people we meet every day we do our dawah bit by bit we dont bombard them with the whole islam in 30secs....
if we were told before hand that we'd be on camera for 30 secs to talk about islam then maybe we could come up with something good that would like brother arsalan said

"spark interest in the listener's mind by saying things that would shake up their conscience and make them think"

anyway i think im babbaling on...:)

do i make sense???

This is a good topic. I have taken a lot of thought about this 30 second moment. It is very important for us to formulate a great answer, that we will be indeed accountable to Allah swt for.

My son, who is only six seemed to know the answer.
Friday we were at a Barnes and Nobles story hour. The topic was diversity. The story teller asked many questions to peak the children's interest. The typical questions- The different colors of eyes, hair, skin. Then she asked the kids if anyone could speak a different language? My son raises his hand- ( last I knew he only speaks english) He is in the front row and I can't reach him- humdil Allah.

He tells her he speaks Arabic and she hands him the microphone and asks him to say something.
He says the Al-Fatiha...

Yep the six year old knew what to do with his 30 seconds...

Myself, I seem to get tongue tied. We do not get the chance that often and really should be prepared. When one on one with a questioning person it is easy enough to know which path to take and address their question. That unknown audience in TV world is different.

Once I was being interviewed on a news program. The topic was about breastfeeding and I am a peer breastfeeding counselor. After editing, the only comments they showed on TV were my comments on Islam. ( They asked if it was easy to breastfeed in public) Then, there was a new bill being passed- making it legal. But some how after editing my words made it seem like it was a diffulculty- because of Islam!
Needless to say I shy away from the TV cameras.

Another incident- When I first became Muslim a local Islamic radio show interviewed me on reverting. As a side question he asked me if I had plans of getting married. In our town there were hardly any Muslim men. So do you want to know what my answer was?
"There are no good Muslim men here." Open mouth insert foot....

Assalam,
Gosh! Their is too many things to say. I would probably say how the jews are killers and liars, but I'll sum it up for the 30 seconds explaining why.

And while I'm saying that,I'll be doing the MC HAMMER and the ROGER RABIT. I want to show everyone my cool dance moves. He-He!

Assalamalaikum warahmatullah
Kathy..that was so cute of him and so mature for a small boy. Mashallah you're bringing him up well. Keep up the good work.
Some days ago I read this written on a water tanker " Qoolu La illaha illa Allah, Tuflihu" Roughly translated it means : Say (with belief or course) that there is no God but Allah, and success/salvation will be yours. At that time i was almost certain that it wasn't an ayah from the Quran. Later i came to know that it's a hadith. And that quite the gist of Islam isn't it? I suppose i'd like to say something like this, but in a real life situation I doubt if i could even open my mouth , coz i suffer from this extremely acute case of stage fright :( and I hate being the centre of attraction.

wassalam
