I may be moving to Al-Bani

Assalamu alaikum.  My name is Shahid, and I'm 28 years old (married)
and am considering accepting a job offer in the Albany area.  I will probably
be visiting in the next few weeks, but I have some general questions about the
Albany community, to which you can respond privately or via this board.  Or you
can engage in random ranting; anything would be helpful.  Please be frank; I'm
really curious about your community, which I've never visited.  FYI, I have
lived in Detroit, State College PA, and now Chicago, so I have experienced both
large and small Muslim communities.

I understand there are two main masajid; the one on Central in Albany and the
one in Troy.  Which is larger in terms of attendance?  How are the facilities
(cramped for space?).  Do the two communities (as well as the university
communities) have joint activities at all?

Are there many brothers and sisters in the 20-35 age group?  About how many
Muslims are there in the Capital City area?

How is the relationship between the Muslim community and the Capital City
population at large?  Any problems recently?

For the brothers: am I going to be able to hoop out there without being in
school?  And does anyone got game in your town? :)

That's all for now; I look forward to your replies and perhaps meeting some of
you soon.

Wassalam,
Shahid Murtuza

Well you will really like the community, insha'Allah.  Alhumdullilah one of the top scholars in the country is there.

Also, with regards to hoops, Lightningatnite has got game.  I'm not sure if you are upto the challenge though.

May I ask what job field you are in?

wlm,

br shahid the story of our community is long and complicated, especially this last year. this last year our whole community has been through alot. i hope the future has more to offer inshaAllah.

When you come please email me or my brother, I'm sure he'd be happy to show you around and explain everything.

There are actually three mosques. I think our community right now is in a depressed state. Many changes have occurred these last few years. Anyway, this is a very nice area and there are alot of activities that do go on, mostly through MSA's of the area.

There aren't too many problems working with the local people here. Due to the efforts of br mokhtar mahgraoui and br djafar sebhkhaoui and some others, there have been ongoing interfaith relationships that have really helped us in times of need... ie--- during oklahoma city bombing...rabbi of a local temple sent us a sympathy card!!! and recently we had a beautiful xtian retreat center given to us for use for an islamic week long retreat on tazkiyatul nafs.

As usual there are alot of ppl that show up for jumah.. At troy they have it in an old auditorium where about 300-400 show up. The amount of Muslims here total... maybe 300 families or so.
On Eid.. well I guess eid doesn't matter cause of eid muslims...I can't really answer about the brothers and the hoop thing :) but lightingatnite has game? (that's news to me bhaloo :))

So I think really brother, that you should visit and see if you like the area and the people here. I believe like anywhere, if you want to be active Islamically and want to learn the resources are here if a person wants to use them.

slm,
br shahid if you like i can add you to the albany muslims email list and you can see what kinds of stuff we do around here... but the best thing would be for you and your wife to definitely visit and check the place out yourselves to see if you like it.
