Assalaamu Alaikum

Has anyone received the image of the Converse ad which was published in an Australian magazine, showing  fully dressed sisters wearing niqab, all in black, eyez showing, hands showing and feet revealed, wearing brightly coloured Converse shoes??

If anyone's interested i'll mail it out and even give you the response by Dean Templeton after i gave him an e-mail about the ad, though i'm unsure of his position at the magazine.

Ok, here is my e-mail and then the response i received:

I am writing this letter in regards to a recent advertisement which was run in the November edition of TV Hits (Australia), showing women in black hijab posing, wearing Converse sneakers (refer to attachment).

Such an advertising is extremely offensive to the Muslim community. What is wrong with Converse shoes? Nothing. What is wrong with Muslim veiled women? Nothing. But  put them together and they create concern.

I always assumed that prior to the launch of a campaign, it would be preceded by some sort of market research. What kind of research was done in this instance? The fact that bright colours looked good against black? Or was it that a fully and decently dressed woman left nothing to be looked at except her bare feet which happened to be enclosed by stylish shoes?

In depth research into the beliefs of Muslims would have allowed you to come to the conclusion that fully covered Muslim women are just that, FULLY COVERED, with no showing of feet. It would also have lead you to the conclusion that we as Muslims take our religion with extreme seriousness and will not stand for even the slightest of offence in regards to it. This ad is an insult to the fully veiled and covered Muslim woman, as well as her Muslim supporting brothers. We as Muslims follow a religion we believe to be sent by the Almighty God Himself, so to mock at the religion is to mock at the One who sent it, God. How could we possibly not take offence? Other such similar ads have offended the Muslim community around the world in the past, yet these ads continue to appear and we find history repeating.

It is no secret that the media tries to portray a negative image of Muslims, so looking at the ad, I don’t feel any non-Muslims would be prompted in buying the shoes as a direct result of the advertisement. We are then left with the Muslim world, who as mentioned earlier would find offence to the advertisement and hence, also refrain from buying the product in question. An all-round failed campaign.

On behalf of the growing Muslim community in Australia, I kindly ask that the ad in question be retracted, and a formal apology be implemented.

Please confer with an Islamic representative before launching any such advertisements in order to minimize eruptions from the Muslim community.

Sincerely,

Miss S. El-Nemr

THE RESPONSE:

Dear Miss El-Nemr,
I believe we spoke on the telephone yesterday regarding the Converse
advertisement featuring Muslim women.
It seems that we have in fact made an error and have offended members of
your community, for that we are sorry and apologise accordingly.
I can only state that our ignorance of the possible offense caused is the
reason for the advertisement being published.
Please inform all concerned that the advertisement has been withdrawn from
publication.  Please also let them know that this was an Australian only
creative and will not, or has not been used in other regions of the world.
In future, if we were to consider any such creative again, we would contact
representatives of the Australian Islamic community prior to progressing.
Please contact me if you have any further concerns over this issue.
regards,
Dean Templeton

what's odd is that i did not speak to him on the phone ... nor anyone for that matter.

Sr Muslima, it wasn't just yourself that spoke and wrote to them. An Aussie Muslim Organisation (similar to CAIR) issued an Action Alert to Muslims to write to Converse telling them to withdraw the offensive ad a few days ago. So i guess he spoke to some other sister the day before.

Alhumdulillah they withdrew the advert.

salaam

That's pretty good when the advertisers actally listen and the Muslims are able to get the ad's taken down.
Recently in Glasgow the Central Mosque complained about an offensive billboard outside the mosque, showing a semi-naked woman, and by writing to the relevant people, they had it removed and an apklogy was given.  Unfortunately, in other parts of the country (namely Luton), Muslims painted over the ad (so technically it was vandalised), and of course non-Muslims took that as an opportunity to 'prove' that all Muslims are extremists, and of course should accept the British way of life (nudity and all) if they want to live in this country!
I think we just have to be more clever in the way we protest, and writing to the relevent parties is a good way of doing that.
Just my 2p's worth.

Kashif - yes don't worry, i know i was not the only one who wrote to converse, as i received knowledge about the ad via 2 e-groups so i'm sure many would have responded :) and you know that is so good to know, and also the fact that action by the Muslim community, be it local or global act very efficiently against such ads ... alhumdulillah we are not slack and don't let these things simply pass us by

tree - don't worry, i like other people's 2P's worth :)
