Assalam-u-Alaikum,

I would like to know what is the Islamic ruling on lotteries?  I think, in my opinion, it is wrong to actually buy the lottery tickets and hope for a win...  but what about those where you do NOTHING but submit your name?

Please do give daleel.

Thanks.

Dr. Siddiqi was asked this question:
. In many of the children’s/Parent’s magazine in Britain there are so called ‘give aways’ advertised. This could range from toys, books, games, car seats, high chairs, push chairs, etc. This involves telephoning them and leaving our address. The ‘give aways’ are distributed after drawing lots from those who have telephoned their addresses in. There is no payment involved, nor are there any commitments. My wife has in the past given our address a couple of times and we have won a car seat and a toy. We are not sure whether this is acceptable in Islam and have tried not to use them and have kept them in our storeroom.

Dr. Siddiqi (President of ISNA) answered this question like this:

The items you received are sent to you as gifts. This was an incentive that made you to give them your name and address as a potential customer. Various businesses often advertise such schemes to attract new customers. Sometimes businesses also ask their customers to drop their cards or addresses in a jar or box and then they draw few names to give some gifts. According to the Shari’ah this is not lottery where people put money and wait for a chance to win. Lottery is a kind of gambling where a person gambles his money and hopes that he will hit a jack-pot. Few people win and the rest all loose. In this case you did not put any money and did not loose anything. Whatever you received came to you as a gift only. Lottery is Haram in Islam, but the scheme that you mentioned is not lottery and is not prohibited. You are allowed to use these items.
