NEW YORK, NY - The following is a statement Congressman Rick Lazio made today
at the Israel Solidarity Rally in Manhattan:

The advertisement for this rally that appeared in the New York Times Sunday
said it best. We come together at a time when Jewish history is being denied
and the Jewish community^Òs rights are being challenged. This afternoon, we
stand at one of the most crucial moments in Israel^Òs 52- year history. We have
an opportunity to tell New Yorkers and the world why must unite behind the
state of Israel.

Today, I repeat the words I spoke on the House floor in March of 1999, ^ÓMr.
Speaker, we must stand with our friends, when they are challenged and today
that means standing with Israel.^Ô I said these words when Yasser Arafat was
considering a unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state. Those words ring
more true today.

As we New Yorkers know, anyone can be a friend when times are good. New
Yorkers want to know, where their officials stand with Israel. My friends let
me be clear. Despite what the UN says, and despite what our own Secretary of
State says, this violence was precipitated, promoted and prolonged by Yasser
Arafat and the Palestinians. William Safire in today^Òs New York Times summed
it up best, ^ÓIsrael does not need a broker in a hostile world; Israel needs an
ally.^Ô

I reject Madeline Albright^Òs contention that somehow General Sharon^Òs visit
to
a site that has been part of Jewish history for over 2,000 years-the Temple
Mount-sparked this violence. The day that any Jew is criticized or discouraged
from visiting the Temple Mount, is a sad day for all who value Democracy and
freedom of religious expression.

The reaction of the international community has been as unfair and one-sided
as it has been predictable. Together, with all of you, I was appalled by the
fact our own government decided to abstain from what was one of the most
anti-Israel resolutions in years. I remember a time when a similar anti-Israel
resolution passed the UN. And I remember our ambassador, Daniel Patrick
Moynihan, who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel in the fight against the
^ÓZionism Equals Racism Resolution.^Ô It was one of the finest hours of
American
diplomacy.

Yet, today, we see administration that leaves Israel in the lurch. Today I ask
you President Clinton, is this any way to treat a friend? Is this the same
United Nations that the Clinton Administration was considering granting
control of the Temple Mount? I^Òm here to defend what is right, and what is
just. I^Òm here to stand solidly with our friends, our fellow democracy-our
most important ally in the Middle East-the state of Israel. As someone who
always was and will continue to be a friend you can trust, I will be there to
fight for Israel during her time of need.
