assalaamu alaikum A number of people have been relieved that Robert Fisk has consistently been writing in "The Independent" presenting an unbiased view of the situation in the Middle East. I received this today, and i sincerely hope that you will write a small letter to make sure that he is allowed to continue with his work. Kashif Wa Salaam -----Original Message----- From: owner-iap-net@iap.org [mailto:owner-iap-net@iap.org]On Behalf Of Islamic Association For Palestine Sent: 18 October 2000 22:00 To: iap-net@iap.org Subject: IAP-Net: ACTION REQUESTED: The Independent under pressure because of Robert Fisk articles Assalamu'alaikum, The Independent has been receiving strong complaints about the articles of Robert Fisk [ for samples of his articles, check this news page www.infopal.org/palnews/ ]. He might be pressured to stop writing if we do not support him. He has complained that if the Arabs and Muslims want him to keep writing, they have at least to say so to the paper's editor, and thank him. Mr. Fisk has done a good job over the years of exposing the lies of the zionist propaganda machine and he deserves the support of the Muslim and Arab community. This is what I wrote. Is it good enough? ________________________________________________ *NOTE*: Those of you who are not journalists, add the following sentence to the letter or delete the entire letter. Write this in place of that sentence: He is an honest man and an inspiration to young journalists and other people as well. Dear Editor-In-Chief, I am writing to say that I support what Robert Fisk writes a 100%, he is an honest man and an inspiration to young college journalists like me. He should be allowed to write for you as everyone else is. He has the right to his opinions and he should not be forced to succumb to the demands of people who don't want the world to know the truth. We all know, including you, that what he has reported is nothing but the truth. Thank you for letting him write for you so far, and I hope that you will continue to let him write for you. He has done nothing wrong and has always been honest and straight forward–something which is emphasized to journalists over and over again. He has always written unbiased articles, another thing which journalists are supposed to do but many do not. He is a hard core journalist, something which is very lacking in today's journalism world. Again, I hope that you will do the right thing by letting him stay and write for you. The world has the right to know the truth and that responsibility lies on the shoulders of journalists. What is a world without the freedom of speech? Journalists have come very far to attain the freedom that they have today and it would be absurd and a shame to go back instead of moving forward. Journalists all over the world are oppressed and prevented from voicing their opinions and writing the truth. I know that UK is not such a country. It will be a great shame if such a thing happens here. I know that in the past the Independent News has always stuck with what is right and I sincerely hope that you will stick to that tradition, something that I admire very much, and that is why I continue to read and follow stories of journalists that work for you including Robert Fisk. Sincerely, A Robert Fisk fan: Your Name OR Sincerely, Your Name |

assalaamu alaikum jazakumullahu khairan sister Saleema, the basic message was good. I've cleared up one or two mistakes in the text - but perhaps if you have 5 minutes you can go over it again and make it more fluid, it would give it much more impact insha'allah. Kashif Wa Salaam |

salaam, Is this ok? I'm not sure what kind of newspaper the Independent is, so I just made some stuff up. -- You pride yourself on providing objective, unbias news to the public. On allowing relatively intelligent readers such as myself to understand the events that occur around us without the taint of a specific agenda or distinctive slant. You pride yourself on allowing me, one of your faithful readers, to come to my own conclusions, even when providing me with specific viewpoints and opinions, because you trust that if I am satisfied with what I read I will continue to support you. And I will continue to support the Independent if Robert Fisk continues to write for it. This is a man with amazing insight, a clear talent for writing, and, surprisingly, an actual sense of right and wrong. Fisk is the embodiment of The Independent, because he does what your paper seeks to do: cause your readers to think. Though I may not always agree with what Robert Fisk has to say, I do appreciate talent and intelligence when I see it. I commend the Independent for allowing the public to see that there are still individuals with some sense of honor. And I commend Robert Fisk for taking the grainy shots of injustices committed far away and making them as real and as painful as if they were happening to my own. |
