[MADRASA] Attaining Perfect Attendance for Muslim children without being penalized for Eids

I am interested in changing the policy of our public school system regarding attendance.

Muslim Children will never receive perfect attendance because of our Eids.

Has anyone dealt with this and solved the problem?
It really does not matter to me that my child receives the PA award as much as why should a child be penalized for attending a day of religious obligation?

I am not so good with words and am planning on sending a letter- can any one of you help me formulate a firm letter?

I don't think they will penalize your son if you let the school know its for religious reasons.  Have you talked to the teacher or principal about this?

Assalamu alaikum,

I suggest you do things through your community.  I'm assuming here that there is some sort of an Muslim executive board in your town to take care of Masjid affairs and Muslims' affairs in general.  If this is the case, go through the officials, get them to draft a letter and send it with you on their behalf.  This way you will be paving the way for other Muslim children as well.  Plus, the school board is more receptive when approached by an Islamic Community as opposed to a Muslim individual.

Wassalamu alaikum.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Jazakallah khirun.
Yes, Students are penalized, because it is not a recognized day off.
Arsalan- you are right- it would be better idea for the letter to come from the community. I do know years ago Eid was changed from an illegal holiday to an abscent day. I will talk to some mom's and see how this change occurred.
Many thanks for pointing out that I am not an island and should be part of the community.

The High School that i went to, if you did not attend school with a valid reason, this didnt affect your Perfect Attendance record. For example, if i am to miss one day of school because of Eid, all i have to do is tell my attendance office that i missed it because of Eid. And this is not counted against me in the tallying of Perfect Attendance records. But you still have that absentage on your record, although its validated.

I'm shocked. I  talked to the director of attendance to do the leg work of information needed for our Brother's to address this issue.
This question has never been asked, You would think with all the diverse cultures and relgions in our area, no one ever thought to ask that their child not be marked abscent for their religious holiday!
He said it was a state level decision... I will keep you posted!

Assalamoalykum,

Sister Kathy, where do you live?? Hey, what's the name of the state that closes its school for Eid? They decided to do that last year or the year before that, I can't remember. I remember reading about it in the Horizons magazine some time back.

In Houston, its considered an excused absence.
