Indeed the praise is for Allah, we praise him and we seek his assisitance and forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and our bad deeds, whoever Allah guides there is none that can misguide him and whoever is lead astray there is none that can guide him, and i bear witness there is no God other than Allah himself and He has no partners, and i bear witness that Muhammad is his servant and messanger,

"O you who believe, fear Allah as he deserves to be feared and do not die except that you are muslims" Al-Imran:102

"O mankind fear your lord, who created you from a single soul, and created from him his wife, and from them both he created many men and women, and fear Allah through whom you demand your mutual rights, indeed Allah is an all-watcher over you" An-nisa:1

"O you who believe fear Allah and say that which is correct. He will rectify your deeds, and forgive you of your sin, and whoever obeys Allah and his messenger has indeed achieved a great achievement" Al-Ahzab:70-71,  and as to what follows.............

This is the manner in which the rasul (saw) used to open most of his khutbah and khutob (speeches), he {saw} also used to teach his companions it, and it is the sunnah to say this khutbah whenever one wants to propose (to a sister), this hadeeth can be found in the sunan of Abu Dawud-chatper of marriage proposal, and An-nas'i, At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Musnad of Imam Ahmad and the Mustrak of Al-Hakim and the hadeeth is saheeh.

"we seek his assisitance and forgiveness" i.e. we seek the assistance of Allah in praising Him and seek forgiveness for our shortcomings in worshipping Him and delaying our obediance to Him.

"we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and our bad deeds" i.e. we refuge in Allah from our bad characteristics (that is within us) becoming appearant and  open and following our desires in the matters of this deen.

"whoever Allah guides there is none that can misguide him" i.e. whoever is sucessful enough to worship Him, there is no human being or shaytaan that can divert him.

"whoever is lead astray there is none that can guide him" i.e. no one can lead him to the straight path; neither by reasoning nor by revalation, or by means of a walee or by a prophet.

"O you who believe, fear Allah as he deserves to be feared and do not die except that you are muslims"   i.e. ibn Abbas and ibn Masood said that this means that one obeys and does not disobey, to remember and do not forget. The scholars of tafseer said that this ayat was revealed and the sahabahs said " o messanger of Allah who can fear Allah as he deserves?"  so Allah revealed "and fear Allah to the best of your ability",  and do not die except that you are muslims"  i.e. one should always be upon islam in such a way that death does not  come to you except that your are a muslim.

"O mankind fear your lord, who created you from a single soul i.e. Adam , and created from him his wife" i.e. Hawa(eve) and from them both he created many men and women, and fear Allah through whom you demand your mutual rights i.e. one should be very careful not to cut of ones' family ties especially the wombs that bore  you, indeed Allah is an all-watcher over you"  i.e. a guardian over you.

"O you who believe fear Allah i.e. going against his commands and His  punishment,  and say that which is correct. i.e. be to the point,  just words,  truthfulness, be upright, say la ilaha ilallah,  He will rectify your deeds, i.e. He will accept your good deeds,  and forgive you of your sin, i.e. wipe away your bad deeds,  and whoever obeys Allah and his messenger, i.e. by doing what has been told do and leaving off what hs beeb prohibited from,  has indeed achieved a great achievement" i.e. he has possesed  a great amount of good.

Shaikh al-islam ibn Taymiyyah has a very enlightening comment on this beautiful khutbah where he said "(notice) since it is that the shahadah cannot be said or beared for another person, that is why it is said in the khutbah  "ashaduu- I bear witness......." , as opposed to seeking assistance, refuge and forgiveness, which can all be in  the plural form whereas, one can seek the assistance of  each other and seek Allahs' help together, and this is why we say "O Allah help us, forgive us'' and so forth. Also in another meaning seeking help, refuge and forgineness are all request, and it is recommend that one seeks these for oneself and the other muslims. As for the shahadah, it is an individual announcement that one can only bear for oneself that one witnesses the oneness of Allah and to His messenger and his messege, and a belief  a person says to indicate his situation, not that of others. (taken from ibn Qayyims' explanation of sunan Abu Dawud.)
