For all practical purposes, yes! Of course the rule doesn't apply to people with blue passports!!! Wassalamu alaikum. |

assalamu alaikum, i personally know few bearded men in egypt and they are not persecuted. but it may be true that there is a law prohibiting men working in government/army to grow a beard. actually, i believe US and canada have similar laws. who are those people with blue passports by the way? foreigners? the egyptian issued travel document for palestinian refugees that i used to hold b4 becoming canadian was blue-coloured... it would be a stretch of the word to say that i was treated preferentially when in egypt!! wassalam |

Assalamoalykum, People in Egypt who keep beards and the sisters who observe hijab are suspicious people in the eyes of the government. They are thought of as terrorists and a lot are harrased. Damn mubarak! That government needs to be overthrown, and that is what the government is afraid of. and they think people with beards and women with scarfs will attempt to do only such a thing. and they are right, because they are the only ones who are oppressed and stand up to the government for their rights which are denied to them. wassalam |

Assalamalikum wa rahmatullah The reason I asked was because of this program I saw on TV. It was an interview of Dr Ahamd Umar Hashim, head of Al-Azhar University in Cairo. He was completely clean shaven and wearing a suite and tie. I don' t know, but for someone who is the president of one of the oldest and most important centres of Islamic learning in the world, I would've expected his attire to reflect it. The only reason I could think of was that keeping a beard could be banned by the government. What do u ppl think? wasalam abc |

I believe Al-Azhar has some unconventional views on the beard. I hope someone can elaborate on this. |

Assalamoalykum, Al-Azhar is where I will be going inshallah. I have looked into their university and the people and they seem to be good Muslims. Maybe he doesn't keep a beard so as to avoid being harrassed by the government. Beardless men can just be as pious as bearded men. wassalam |

Assalamoalykum, I can't decide when I want to go. I know I want to take a year off from my "secular" studies and devote the whole year and a summer to learing Islam. I have the choice to go in 2001 or 2002. I can't decide which?????? wassalam |

My brother spent three years studying at Al-Azhar and all the time he was there he kept his beard trimmed. My mother didn't like it but he said that it made life a lot easier whilst he was out there. Basically, anyone with a long beard got hassled at airports, by the police etc... I don't think it has got anything to do with Al-Azhar but the government. I remember when we stopped off in Cairo, on the way back from Umra, my dad got a lot of hassle from them because he had a long beard (and he was travelling on his Pakistani passort, whereas, the rest of our group were travelling using British passports...) As-salamu Alaikum.. Just a side note, lets refrain from using the term that is damning something or someone... Yah, the Egyptian Government has an agency which hunts down and arrests Ikhwan members, hence most of these guys have shaved their beards in fear of being captured. Yah as for the Al-Azhar president, its the same matter. You get alot of crap with a beard. Unless you have US citizenship, then you are all fine.... wa salaam |

slm I wouldn't exactly agree with what everyone seems to be saying about American citizens in Egypt. They too, if they have long beards and wear naqab, are harassed and some are jailed-for no reason other than their suspected "terrorism." The only difference is-the Egyptian government doesn't get away with it for long. I think some people are overestimating the Egyptian government-it hates any Muslim -American passport or not-that tries to implement the sunnah and principles of Islam (ie. beard, naqab) into their lives. I say this from experience :( and yes, there are many very religious men and women who fear the government and so, don't wear beards or niqab for that reason. |
