In The Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
Assalamu Alaikum,
How is everyone? I'm fine alhamdulillah.
My subject relates to my english teacher. Today in class we were talking about the play "Oedipus Rex". For those who don't know what the play is about, Oedipus is cursed with a prophecy from birth that he will someday kill his father and marry his mother. So, his parents pierce the tendons of his ankles and give him to a shepherd to hang on the side of a mountain, but the shepherd feels bad for him and gives him to another shepherd to take to another city. He does and he grows up knowing his foster parents, but one day he leaves his home and comes to a crossroads and meets with a carriage and people with the carriage. He kills the five people and the king in the carriage, who was his biological father.
He goes on to the town of Thebes and solves the riddle of the sphinx and is awarded by marrying the Queen, who is his mother. Later he finds out about this and pokes out his eyes.
In class we were talking about fate and how Oedipus' fate was planned before he was born. Someone asked the teacher if he believed in a religion or if he believed in fate. He said that he studied Islam, Judaism, Christianity in college but decided to go with Atheism. He said that he doesn't believe in anyting and that he will wait until he dies. How stupid is that? He also said that to put all your beliefs in something that you can't see...The students didn't want to talk about it so he stopped.
In turn, I told him that obviously he wasn't educated enough because you have to believe in a God.
He also said that he will wait until he dies. According to him, he will be in his grave and then he will decide what he religion he wants to follow.
Teachers know about the subjects they teach, but when it comes to topics that they've just skimmed the surface of, it's pathetic b/c they think they know, but they really don't.
So, if anyone has teachers that talk about topics that they really don't know what they're saying, speak up and tell them they're wrong.
B/c my teacher also said that the gods have planned our fate and people are little ants and the gods control everything, and the people can't make any choices in their lives. I would really like to tell him that Allah does write in everyone's book of what's going to happen in their lives to the very second, but he knows of the decisions the people will make and he writes them down. Even though people make decisions, Allah-u Teala knows beforehand of their decisions and that is their fate.
Well, this is all from me. If anyone has comments, feel free.
Assalamu Alaikum,
Betul

Assalamoalykum,

My experience with Atheists and Agnostics has been a positive one. Most converts to Islam are Athiests and Agnostics. In high school, these were the people whom I got along with and who showed respect for Islam and every other religion except for Christianity. My Christian friends would look down their noses at me whenever Islam came up, these were the Avengelists and the fundamentalist Christians of course. The other kids didnt' even know what sect they were or could care less, so I didn't have any problems with them.

Laa ilaaha illa Allah.

The first step is to say laa ilaah (there is no god).  The second is to say illa Allah (except Allah).

At least the atheists have taken the first step!  They have denied all gods.  Now all we need to do is convince them that Allah is the One True God.

Wassalamu alaikum.

From the Webster's Dictionary:

Ag*nos"tic, n. One who professes ignorance, or denies that we have any knowledge, save of phenomena; one who supports agnosticism, neither affirming nor denying the existence of a personal Deity, a future life, etc.

A"the*ist, n. One who disbelieves or denies the existence of a God, or supreme intelligent Being.

salam :)

In the Quran, the concepts of agnosticism and atheism do not exist.  The word the Quran uses is kaffir, which means one who hides, buries, like a farmer. It also comes from a word that means ungrateful.

See, if you ask me who God is, I cannot explain it, because Allahu Akbar, Allah The Most Gracious is greater than the world, our minds, and everything we can possibly conceive of.  So alot of people who claim to be atheists are just realizing that God isn't some man sitting up in heaven like they were taught in Catholic school.

Believing in Allah The Most Merciful is being thankful to everything He gave you and worshipping Him because He gave you life and all these wonderful gifts. Its recognizing the beauty of His Creation, not seeing Him physically.

If you walk on a beach (properly attired of course :) and you see footprints, you realize, "Hey, someone was here." In the same way, the believer increases his or her Iman whenever he or she reflects on creation.

The Muslim is humble, and a humble person is always thankful. Allah The Most High condemns arrogant people many times in the Quran.  Why is being arrogant so bad? Because the arrogant person never says thank you...to people, nor to Allah The Most Kind.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that being an atheist or an agnostic has nothing to do with what you believe intellectually, but more to do with being thankful. Aisha, your teacher is so ungrateful for all the gifts Allah The Most Generous gave him.

Ok, sorry for being so BORING!!! :)  If any of you have never had the chance to walk down a beach at night, you have to do it.  It is probably one of the most memorable experiences of my life...because you are totally surrounded by Allah's beautiful creation, the sand beneath your feet, the sound of the waves, the ocean air, the stars above you...just do it, ok :)

Wassalam.

That's not the definition i had found but pretty close....for me personally.....being Agnostic meant that I simply had no way of knowing whether God existed or not...therefore i didnt claim either....

I thought i was ready to start practicing Islam again but everyday i read something new on this board and i start getting doubts.....so I'm putting it off for now..till i am absolutely sure that is what i want to do......

I wouldnt appreciate being judged and being called ignorant because i feel that i am far from ignorant...so im not gonna say am Agnostic...for now i am just Harisa.....

ok just had to get that out
take care everyone

Assalamoalykum,

Harisa, don't be angry. Arsalan gave the definition that was in a dictionary. so really, you should be getting mad at them.  :)

Oh another thing Harisa, the use of the word ingnorance was used in a positive context, or should I say in a neutral context? Meaning since an Agnostic can't prove or disprove whether God exists, that area is of an ignorace to them.

Who was the Prophet, on whom may be peace, that dealt with an atheist? Or an athiest people? I know i have read it somewhere. Leaving that aside, I would just like to point out something that atheism did exist, perhaps even always in the human history, but it has become more widespread these days. back in ancient times it was strange and rare to find such people, most everyone believed in a God or gods.

I would like to point out the book, even angels ask, where it says why there is a phenomenon of atheism so rampant in today's society. Don't you remember reading the part where the author gives the description of the average athiest agnostic who converts. No, atheism and agnosticism don't necessarily have to do with intelectualism, but many times it does. There are always exceptions to rule and lets not jump to conclusions on judging the ABD's teacher.
