ASallaams everyone. Someone I know wants to open a video rental store. The brother is concerned about any rules / hukms etc with regards to his business plan. From my conversation with him he seems cool as he doesn?t plan to have any indecent stuff in his store. But with regards to making a living from video rental...there's that grey area. As we know many movies that come out of hollywood aren't at all islamic - ...so there is this element of doubt.. Can you help all this with any hukms ? info ? views ?advice ? Cheers bigEars :) JazakAllah Kair! Majzoob. |

Wa'alaikum assalam, I'm not a scholar, so I'm not gonna give any rulings here! Just two pieces of advice: 1. You yourself said that it's a "gray area." Try, always, to stay out of the gray areas! This was the advice of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). 2. The ayah in your signature, look at it. I think it'll give you a hint for the answer that you're looking for! Wassalamu alaikum. |

Dear brother Arsalen… you’re right – but with regards to the context of point1-- I think the hadith is in the context of a situation that’s undecisive/grey After it has been investigated on a scholar sort of level /thought about /studied. And that’s where&what ...although I said grey – I actually don’t know.. :( ?? And this is faithfully what the sincere brother is currently focussed on finding out. + the intention of the post ...to help him ...with any hukms – info – views –advice ? The difficult part of all this is sometimes there are all sorts of enthusiastic strong and even conflicting views Eg US soldiers on the hijaz is allowed Vs No WAY! Get them out/ + who let them in Eg Don’t drink coke its haraam – Coke is Halal !! and sure tastes good :0 Eg T.V is haram – T.V is Halal Eg Wedding Rings Are Haram Bidah – No They’re allowed but we Have to go through all this otherwise we may rule out something which is permissible [Just like the telephone was ruled out in the latter era of the Khilafah – This was one of the hukms that then weakened the Islamic Khilafah – … inshaAllah it will return soon ] So please please any more any hukms – info – views –advice ? on the sincere brother owning / buying a video store ? WasallaamS M. |

IMHO, this is not a grey issue like the ones mentoined above but a black and white one. It is haram for a man to look into the face of a non-mahram woman. When a man watches a video, this is what he is doing. So apart from any other consideration, this makes watching videos haram. If something is haram to do, then it is worse to encourage doing it, for example by selling/renting the things which are haram. For in that case, the one who renst the videos accumulates upon himself all the sins of those watching the videos. So my advice to this brother is not to go down this path, but to do something halal and to pray to Allah to make the halal way easier for him. There is an authenric dua in regard to this : "Allahumnak finee bi halaaleeka an haraameeka wa aghneenee bi fadhlika amman siwak" Approximate translation : "Oh Allah, give me enough of the halal so that I don't need to go into haram, and make your bounty sufficient for me." May Allah SWT guide us all, Ameen |

Jazakalaa - some very good points & advice. Personally although we chose not to have a tv at home - I still occasionally see a movie or come across western pictures in the newspapers/ adverts very often etc. I suppose the secular systems that we live in today are "all about" making it difficult to live a true islamic code of life. may Allah give us strength to aspire to this. Asalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatu I personally think that TV is from shayton because although there are some good programs there is still a bunch of fitna on it...ie Commercials etc......There is sooo much garbage on the TV. Astagfirllah I am weak and I do watch TV. May Allah help us not to be like this...Ameen I do watch movies as well but before I do I go to this website KidinMind.com it a great website for finding out if there is any sexuality, Profanity and violence....It tells you how much etc......Insha'Allah May Allah help us in all that we do! Ameen! Jenna P.S. I hope the website helps!! It did and does for us!! Alhumdulilah...... |
