New Look!

Assalamu Alaikum,

jannah.org looks awesome!! I love the whole "catch a butterfly to search."  Its soo cute!! The whole rainforest/jungle/waterfall motif is pretty cool especially with the "gardens of jannah" underlying theme :)  Mad props to jannah.  I REALLY REALLY want to learn how to make a good website.  The only thing I know how to do is add and remove links for existing websites :)  I want to use html/javascript though.  Anyways, Insha'Allah, I'll learn soon. :)

Anyways, good work!! Masha'Allah.

Take Care,
Wassalam

Assalamu alaikum,

Sr. Huma, ready for some criticism?  :)

I like the new look, but the font colors of the category-links are too dark and hard to read from the background.

I don't really like the flying butterflies for doing the search.  It's annoying and frustrating!  I don't know if it's just me, but I couldn't catch those things with my mouse and click fast enough!!!  Then again, I was never good at catching butterflies anyway :)

I like the background alot.  I always liked mountains, forests and waterfalls.  And it goes well with the "Jannah" theme (Gardens under which rivers flow!).  But the color combination is not right for the category-links.  Maybe if the waterfall and forest were underneath a beautiful sky, and you put the categories in dark font on the sky, not on the rocks, then it might look better.

Or just try playing with different font colors.

Anyway ... it definitely looks better than the old page :)

Wassalamu alaikum.
P.S. This thread should be moved to the Media Center.

Asalamalaikum,

The new site looks great, but I agree with Arsalan abt the font colors of the category-links, they are too dark to read.
Besides that I think it looks really good especially the waterfall and I love the butterfiles.
Good Job sis Huma

I agree with Arsalan as well, but the graphics look really nice.  It looks like something from a tropical island. :)

The major complaint I have though is that the board is mentioned at the bottom.  We need to be mentioned near the top.

Assalam-u-Alaikum,

Wow!  So this is what you do in your spare time... The new look is really fantastic with the waterfall and everything... but i think you should change the default color in the image map (is that what you call them?) from black to something else.  It makes it easier to skim all the text.  Also there is a bug in the rollover for "Kewl Muslims".

Otherwise sis, great job!

P.S. I expected a thread like this to be at the Dar Al-Hikmah sections... since it wasn't i started one myself... now that i found this i can't remove the one i started.

Assalaamu alaikum,

The page does look awesome! Nice job, nice graphics in a great theme. I am really bad at aesthetics so I am kind of curious where do you get all these graphics from? Do you create them yourselve? Wow!

I will also echo Arsalan's suggestion on font color. Also, use ALT tags for the category images. Always provide an alternative text for images that are links. And list all the category links in plain text at the bottom (or any other place) so that those using lynx or text readers can find them.

Otherwise, everthing looks great!

And what is this about catching a butterfly to do a search? They are too darn fast for me!! Slow them up or something. :)

Wasalaam.

wow thanks for all the suggestions.  i think i fixed that ppl link one, thanx for catching it!...

as for the link colors.. it's not supposed to be bright! they should blend in with the mountain and you shouldn't be able to read them well until your mouse hovers over them 'discovering the links', as long as you can kind of tell there are links there you should go over and hover and read them.

the catch a butterfly i'll end up changing later on since the sitemap goes to a search page. also all the butterflies don't go to a search page, just a few of them so no doubt makes it difficult :)btw arsalan that's why i made the search as a link for the less hand-eye-coordinated :P

alt tags are a great idea.. however i have yet to figure out how to do them without messing up the javascript and yup i plan to add a text only link at the bottom

btw if i add alt tags they are only for those people using graphic browsers anyway because these are the only ones using javascript

lynx and other users would need to have their own text only links at the bottom, i think a link to the sitemap would work for that

asalamu alaikum,

great job sr. jannah, very impressive masha'Allah.

and i caught a butterfly...hoo hoo :-)  nothing to do with my hand eye coordination abilities, more with my snail's pace internet connection!! we still use a phone connection, not a high speed cable one :-(

and that's the concern here, the page is loaded with gorgeous gifs but i had to wait considerably longer than used to before. if you could figure a way to reduce image size (info content, not physical size), then this would be great and might speed things up for the non-techies like myself :-)

Assalaamu alaikum,

Actually lynx does display the image file names with links even though they are generated by javascript. Maybe lynx can interpret javascript? The file names, however, do not provide any info on what the link is about.

I don't know how to add alternative text to images using javascript. ALT tags are used in HTML. But if you just add a line of text links that will solve the problem.

It would be cool to have background sound of the waterfall and jungle :) But then, this will make the page load even slower as Sr. Mona pointed out. Of course, I don't have any problems with slow connections as I have direct network access (10 Mb/s !!!). (probably that is why I don't want to get out of school :))

Assalaamu alaikum,

Yes, it is 10 Mb/s Ethernet!! But I don't get the whole 10 Mb cause it is a shared medium :( And traffic has increased manifolds in the last 1-2 years.

BUT STILL, my download speeds (from good servers, of course) can be upto 300 kBytes/s (i.e. about 2.4 Mbits/s :o). I feel sorry for those with 56 kb/s modems. ;)

Wasalaam.
