Question on WD Muhammad

Answered by Sh Bilal Phillips

Q. What is your opinion regarding the so-called Imam Warithudeen Muhammad, who is a leader of Muslims in America and is said to be an upholder of the Quran and Sunnah?

A. All of Warithudeen Muhammad's statements to date have been praising his father (Elijah Muhammad, who claimed that Allah was a man and that he was the last messenger of Allah). Warithudeen has changed most of the practices that were practiced during his father's time, but he still insists on praising his father and referring to him as the Honorable Elijah Muhammad.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, "However honors a mubtadir (an innovator: one who brings something new into the religion) has helped to destroy Islam." Elijah Muhammad is the worst of mankind and he is cursed by Allah. Allah has said in the Quran, "Who is worse than the one who claims to receive revelation, has received  nothing." [Soorah Al-'Anaam (Chapter 6), Verse 93], those are the worst of mankind. So to honor such a person is a major deviation.

This sums up the level of his Islam and that is how we as Muslims, should judge people. If you praise one who is cursed by Allah, then you are displeasing Allah. Part of our faith is to love those who Allah loves and hate those who Allah hates. All those who seek to praise enemies of Allah, put themselves in the category of being enemies of Allah. So, for example, an individual like Farrakhan, though he maybe a very effective and eloquent spokesman and uses the name of Islam, he is a reviver of the original teachings of Elijah Muhammad. So to even speak of him in an honorable fashion or to praise him, is a major mistake on the part of Muslims. He is a blatant enemy of Islam.

Assalamoalykum,

I am not for or against Imam Warithudeen Muhammad, because he might have changed his rhetoric on his father now. I don't know if he still talks like that or not. But I do know that he is accepted as a Muslim and so are the people on whom he presides over as an Imam. I would just like to say one thing.

When his father was about to die, he called a press conference and also posed for a lot of pictures. Lewis Farakan was present there also. Elijah Muhammad based his religion on the translation of the Qur'an used by the Ahmadis. At the Press conference, he told his son to bring him the copy of the Yusuf Ali translation. He held the copy of the Yusuf Ali translation in his hand and posed for a picture with his son, Warithudeen Muhammad, standing beside him. The photographers were about to take the pictures, when Elijah Muhammad stopped them and told his son to put his hand on his shoulder. Farakan was standing to the side. In that picture, you could see the words "Yusuf Ali translation" very clearly. Farakan, over the years, has tried to get rid of the picture from the public's hands. He has almost been successful. In our community, a brother named Jamaludin al-Haider, has the *original* copy of the picture.

What is the significance of posing like that? Well, that Warithudeen Muhammad would lead the black people to the real Islam, which was shown by Elijah Muhammad when he told his son, Warrithdeen Muhammad, to place his hand on his shoulder with Farakan standing to the side. Elijah Muhammad had his son bring him the Yusuf Ali translation of the Qur'an.

Elijah Muhammad always possessed the two translations of the Qur'an, the true one, by Yusuf Ali, and the false one, by the Ahmadiyas. In his last days, he referred to the Yusuf Ali translation. Frakah was told to follow in the footsteps of his son, but he didn't.

I think it will tell you when this was answered. I'm not sure.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but are you saying that the passage of time has somehow expunged Warith Deen's record of incorrect statements & put him in the clear?

If he has stoped saying that, then how do you know that he hasn't been forgiven by Allah? Just because a scholar, (don't take me wrong, i have the utmost respect for Bilal Philips), says that he is not a good person, (I know he doesn't say that, but it is implied), doesn't mean that he actually isn't a good person. Passage of time doesn't wipe away your sins, but Allah's Mercy does. How do you know that he hasn't asked for Allah's Mercy. How do you know that he still refers to his father in such a manner? If he does, then that's wrong. If he doesn't anymore, then people need to stop bringing up his past. The people in the United States accept his as a good Muslim, I was surprised to read that about him from Bilal Philips website. Again, I am not going to form an opinion on him without finding out further information.

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

It is not clear from the web site when Bilal Philips wrote that answer.  I know that W.D. Muhammad has gone through many changes in his lifetime, and it has been a gradual process.  A process that is still continuing, mind you.  First, he was a part of Nation of Islam, the son of Elijah Muhammad.  Then he split from the organization and took with him a huge number of NOI members to the true teachings of Islam.  Although officially a Sunni Muslim, he had many things to learn.

I don't know if WD Muhammad still calls his father "the Honorable Elijah Muhammad."  I doubt that he does.  But IF he does, then may Allah give him Guidance.  It is not easy to do what he did a couple of decades ago.  And we need to help him rather than criticize him.

Especially considering the huge number of people who are influenced by this man.

I have a friend who is a member of WD's community.  From talking to him, it seems that these people *hate* NOI people and their teachings with a passion!  Their aqeedah is just as correct as any sunni Muslim as well.  Unfortunately, that friend of mine left for Ohio 6 months ago and I've lost touch with him.

I'm trying to find out a web site of his organization that I had seen a year ago.  I'll post it on here once I find it insha Allah.

Wassalamu alaikum.

Sister Saleema, if he has stopped saying it, this isn't good enough. He has to publically come out and retract the statements that he has.

If today i publically say something like "Jesus will not return and whoever tells you the opposite is wrong" and do not publically retract this, then how can i complain if the people bring this up time and again?
Passage of time doesn't wipe away your sins, but Allah's Mercy does. How do you know that he hasn't asked for Allah's Mercy.
If he has asked for Allah's Mercy, he will separate himself from Farrakhan AND his father and take back his words which are too numerous to quote. We're talking about issues of imaan and kufr, and not small issues that have no impact.
Again, I am not going to form an opinion on him without finding out further information.
Let me guarantee you, there is more than enough information out there for you to see.

Arsalan: the Bilal Phillips website is not more than 12-14 months old - if that.
