Here is my invaluable insight :-) Hareesa is an Arabic( maybe Turkish(?)) dessert...so your name means sweet? Was I even close??? BTW br. proudtobemuslim, it is "Harith" which means protector. In some Arabic slangs, "th" is pronounced as "s" in informal speech. But good try otherwise :-) |

well it may mean the same thing, 'protector'. Since in some cultures the tha is pronounced as a seen would be prononuced. So maybe harisa's name is in arabic haritha. just like usmaan = uthmaan, rizwan = ridwan, the usual paki name conversions apply.... wa salaamu alaikum |

isn't it amazing how 3 vastly different dishes could be called hareesa. so far I've heard it describe a hot-chilli tunisian recipe and a meat+rice dish from india(?) and we use the same word for a palestinian/lebanese dessert!! |

slm It depends on how it is pronounced,is it pronounced with a long e,like hareesa,if it is then it is all the past mentioned foods. If it is with a short "i" as it is written, with the stress on the first sylable "haarisa"then its guard or guardian. |

Assalamualaikum Warrahmatullah, Well we should ask sister Harisa what she would like to be. As sister Mona pointed out three different dishes in three different countries have the same name. I would like to add a few lines to that. Muslim food throughout the world seems to be somewhat similar. When I came to the west for the first time I thought that certain dishes belonged to my country only but then when I met people from Arab world I saw how similar our dishes were. And Harisa I am your brother currently doing research in Germany. Wassalam, Riyaz. |
