My understanding is that all the hadith referring to Shab-e-Barah are weak, and that the Porphet (SAW) did not AUTHENTICALLY inform his ummah to make this night one of special worship.

VERY interesting article!!!

I'm surprised!!!

For those who don't know Taqi Usmaani, he's to Pakistan as Shaikh Abdullah bin Baz was to Saudi Arabia.

Of course, that doesn't mean all his fatwas are correct :)

Wassalamu alaikum.

As salaamu alaykum, the humble muslim was correct when he said out that "all the hadith referring to Shab-e-Barah are weak", and in addition to strengthen this point as Shaikh Bin Baz says (on his webpage/www.binbaz.org.sa/) after mentioning the evils of innovation and it being rejected using evidences from the quran and sunnah, he said "and from the things some people have innovated, is innovation of the middle of Shabaan, by singling it out as a day for fasting, there is no depedable proof that one can rely on to do this. There are some hadeeths mentioning it's merits (middle of Shabaan), but they are all daefah (weak) which are impermissable to rely upon, and as for those hadeeth that mentioned praying on that particular day, they all mawdoo (fabricated), and many of the  people of knowledge had already pointed this out, like those from the the Shaam area (Palestine. Jordan, Syria), Ibn Rajab in his book "Lataa'if Al Ma'arif", and the concensus of the scholars that singling out prayers and fasting during mid-shabaan is a bidah, however some scholars may use a weak hadeeth if it is related to a worship that has a base, as for the middle of shabaan it has no authentic origins, that we can even build something upon it............................................................." to the end of his fatwa.

Assalamu alaikum,

destined: the ahadith encouraing fasting in the month of Sha'baan are authentic, and there is no dispute on that.  It is the sacredness of the 15th of Sha'baan that is disputed.  Ibn Majah does not contain all authentic ahadith.  It has some da'eef ones.

But again, I'm amazed to see the article by Taqi Usmaani!!!

Wassalamu alaikum.

Assalaamu aliakum

Let me first say that I am totally ignorant and do not have much knowledge :(

But one thing I have learnt from my friends is as mentioned by Arsalan which is:
Taqi Usmaani, he's to Pakistan as Shaikh Abdullah bin Baz was to Saudi Arabia.
I've read many articles and books written by him and I must say that he is one of the very few scholars remaining (alive) that are still independant of external interference. Recently the Historic Judgement (a judgement passed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan) has been published detailing the articles for abolishing riba (completely) from the land of Pakistan.

Further to the query at hand, due to large number of weak and fabricated ahadith that have clouded the issue of the 15th of Sha'baan and its merits, one of the students of Shaikh Taqi Uthmani (from England)has compiled a book critically analysing every hadith along with its sanad regarding the 15th of Sha'baan. He has also reported authentically the practice of the salaf-as-saliheen and their daleel for the 15th of Sha'baan. The book is complete and finished. It just needs to be published. Insha'Allah it should be out very soon. The title of the book - I don't know cuz he hadn't decided the title the last time I went to visit him. I'll keep you guys updated regarding the title and the release date. BTW, all this is inside information so you guys are not supposed to know - ok?
Allah's illumination and mercy descends on to the skys and He says "Is there any servant of mine who begs Me for pardon and forgiveness, so that I forgive him?" Is there any servant of Mine who begs Me for sustenance so that I decide to give him sustenance? Likewise Allah calls to various neendy persons so that they may ask Him to remove their needs and He may grant their petition. [Ibn Majah]
does Allah descend every night, is that not why night prays are the best and people exorted to them......
