[MADRASA] How do I go about re-establishing a relationship with Allah?

Asalaam Alaikum and a belated Eid Mubarak to all

Ive gotten absorbed in insignificant things and over a few yrs (3) feel like I have become distanced from a close connection to Allah (swt) and a passion for religion. Like becoming lazy with prayers and reading Quran. How do I go about re-establishing that? What else can I do and make it so it never happens again?
Inshallah Im gonna try never to miss another prayer again and read Quran everyday.

WALIKUMAS'SALAAM WARAHMATULLAHI WABARAKATUHU :)

i don't suggest u tryin to read qur'an everyday, and pray all ur salah's including sun'nah, naf'l's..

i know that sounds bad..cuz i'm tellin u not to pray..but it's something to think about..

if u aren't used to something..and then u overwhelm urself with all this..it's gonna make u tired..and a bit reluctant to wanna do anything..it'll seem like it's too much..

that's how i got back into praying and stuff..:) but maybe that doesn't make sense :) just a thought :) ma'salaam :)

Assalaamuailaikum!

I would heavily everyone (including myself foremost!) in the remembrance of death and the afterlife when one becomes lazy in prayers and other religious matters .....

This quote is from The Remembrance of Death and the Afterlife (Kitab dhikr al-mawt wa-ma ba'dahu)
from "The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya `ulum al-din) by Imam Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali"

Said Ka'b [al-Ahbar], 'When the righteous bondsman is laid in his tomb he is surrounded by his righteous acts, such as his prayer, his fasting, his pilgrimage, his engagement in the Holy War, and the charity he used to distribute. Then the Angels of Chastisement approach him from the direction of his feet, but are told by Prayer,"Get back from him, you have no authority over him, for upon those [feet] he stood in me at length for the sake of God". Then they approach him from  the direction of his head, but Fasting says, "You have no authority over him, for in the world's abode he thirsted at length for the sake of God". Next they draw near to him from the direction of his trunk, but Pilgrimage and Holy War say, "Get back from him for he exhausted himself and wearied his body when he accomplished the Pilgrimage and the Holy War for the sake of God; no authority do you have over him". Then they approach him from the direction of his hands, but Charity says, "Back! Retreat from my master, for how many an act of charity issued from those two hands to fall in to the hand of God (Exalted is He!), while he acted only for His sake; no authority, do you have over him". Then he shall be told, "Rejoice! Good you have been in life and in death!" Next, the Angels of Mercy come, and spread a heavenly cloth and resting-place out for him, and his grave is widened around him for as far as the eye can see. A candle is brought from Heaven, and from it he has light until God resurrects him from his grave.'

Reading Surah Waqiah (The Event, The Inevitable)is also good as it describes the grouping in the afterlife.....

assalaamu alaikum

By all means exert yourself in prayer and recitation of the Qur'an. The Qur'an is a wonderful cure for the afflictions of the heart.

Make friends with practising Muslims & get yourself involved in islamic activities. And after every fard salaah, and at other times recite the following dhikr:

"Allahumma a`innee `alaa dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ibaadatik"

- O Allah aid me in remembering you, thanking you & worshipping you properly.

Inshallah keeping good company will help you back along the Straight Path

Try to make as many prayers in the Masjid as possible rather than praying at home

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

It's good to get involved in Islamic activities, but don't overwhelm yourself.  Give yourself time to step back and contemplate your life, reflect on where you think you started to go wrong.  Definitely take time out to yourself away from people and problems.  Do a self assessment, figure out what exactly is wrong, what you're having trouble with.  Make dhikr, read Quran, think.  Somewhere around nature, where you can see the sky, is usually a good environment.

And the most important thing you can do:  DUA.  Turn to Allah and ask of Him whatever you want or need.  I always used to hear speakers say "tell your problems to Allah", but when you actually do that, when you actually raise your hands and tell Allah the condition of your heart, your nafs, your eman, how lost you feel, this helps *so* much.

The words you use to describe your condition are soo interesting, because check this out:  I was taught that the word salah comes from the root silaat - which means a link, a direct connection, a direct connection to Allah the Most Merciful.  So a way you can "re-connect" with Allah is through salah.. not mechanical ritual prayer, but salah with your heart and your mind completely focused on Allah.

One of the names of Allah is at-Tawaab, the Oft-Returning.  Meaning no matter how many times you turn to Allah, He will not reject you.  Allah is the Most Merciful, and He will forgive you and guide you and love you if you turn to Him and ask for His forgiveness.  Don't ever think it's too late for you to ask Allah for His mercy or guidance.  Just do it, just force yourself to do it, because the longer you wait the harder it will be.

I always find that the people who I spend my time with make a huge difference in determining the condition of my heart and my actions.  Your companions truly can dictate what kind of a person you are or will become.  Find some people who are righteous and devout Muslims who refrain from sin.  When you spend your time with those people, you will subconsciously begin to take on their habits and behaviors. You will become more conscious of committing sin around such people. They will strenghten you and you both will complement each other.  I also suggest that you stop watching TV and refrain from any other bad habits which hinder you from the rememberance of Allah.  As the other brothers & sisters mentioned, read Quran, pray, and make dua.  In time, insha'Allah, your heart will be firm and steadfast in Islam.
