| Asalaamu Alaikum :) A Brother showed me this story. I wonder whether any of our Brothers or Sisters in Saudi could give us any more information on the boycott. Saudi press hits at Clinton By Robin Allen in Dubai Published: January 9 2001 20:01GMT Last Updated: January 9 2001 20:05GMT Saudi Arabia's press on Tuesday launched scathing attacks on the outgoing administration of US president Bill Clinton accusing it of eight years of pro-Israeli bias, and reflecting hardening public sentiment in the Arab world against the US. The press criticism from the US's key regional ally is seen by some analysts as a harbinger of a more intensive Saudi public boycott of US goods and services which could spread to other US trading states such as Egypt. According to an editorial in the the daily Al-Riyadh, Mr Clinton had become "a hostage surrounded by Israeli advisers, ambassadors and businessmen - that revealed the moral fabric of his leadership. What concerns us," the editorial continued, "is not his scandals or success but the net with which he tried to hunt and strangle every bird in the Arab sky." Mr Clinton had tried to "obliterate the history and culture of [the Arab] nation, and kept quiet on crimes against Islamic sanctities." According to the daily Al-Watan, "Clinton wanted a prize at the end of his term - Let the proposals" in relation to the president's latest peace initiative "leave with those leaving the White House." Analysts dismissed the possibility that the unprecedented criticism in Saudi newspapers, which are subject to state censorship and frequently reflect government policy, may have been government-inspired. "Our editorial reflects our reading of the effects of eight years of Clinton's administration," said Abdul-Mohsen Daoud, deputy chief editor of Al-Riyadh on Tuesday. According to Khaled al-Maeena, editor-in-chief of the daily Arab News, the editorials reflect the "pent-up frustration of the way Clinton has tried to force a deal down the throats of the Arabs to make himself look favourable to the Israelis". "When something is rumbling under the surface of the Saudi political structure," said one analyst with 30 years' experience in Saudi Arabia, "and in the absence of any formalised method of expressing political opinions, the press is the first safety valve. "And if the target is not the government, or its bureaucracy, then the US is the next in line." Since the start of the Al-Aqsa intifada, the Palestinian uprising against Israeli authorities in Jerusalem, the West bank and Gaza, teachers in schools and preachers in mosques throughout Saudi Arabia have encouraged the comparatively small but growing boycott of US goods and services as a way of protesting at what they see as the US alliance with Israel. US fast-food and retail franchises, notably in Saudi Arabia, have reported a sharp decline in the number of customers. | Does it really require 8 years to understand this plain fact? For more than two decades, the Zionist grip over US policy known to all! Maybe the report shows some degree of change, but there is nothing in it for the Ummah to have a sigh of relief! |

| Assalamu alaikum, Here in Morocco we're trying to do the same, at least certain categories of people are. We tried to get a list of American products sold here. It's probably not as much as in Saudi, since we import mainly from Europe but it's amazing how much there are. The boycott could become really effective if it were more publicized, like the time Burger king was being boycotted by all Arab countries. It worked, at least for a while. |
