Headscarf ban in Marmara University

11-01-2001

Ankara - Turkish Daily News

Headscarf ban began to be practiced in Marmara University (MU)'s
Faculty with the joint decision of faculty lecturers and the MU Senate which
gathered after faculty dean Professor Zekeriya Beyaz's being wounded in
a knife attack, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Students who came to the theology faculty which is located at
Altunizade starting from morning hours met the announcement hanged on the
faculty's entrance, which included the criteria on the outward appearance of
students.

While students wearing headscarves left the school after reading the
announcement, those who attempted to go into the faculty without noticing
the bylaw were not permitted in by security officers at the entrance.

"In accordance with the decision made by the university senate and
faculty lecturers, the article 29/A of the Marmara University's
Undergraduate and Master Programs Regulations was put into force starting from
Jan. 10, 2001. Those who act contrary to this will not be let in the
faculty campus by no means," said the announcement which has the sign
"Faculty of Theology Deanship" under it.

Article 29/A of the mentioned regulation, which was also given in the
announcement is as follows:

"Students have to be open headed and in temporary clothes fitting
Ataturk reforms and principles and the decisions of the Constitutional
court, in all open-air and indoors areas of Marmara University. The
sentences of the Higher Board of Education (YOK) Regulation are applied to
those who don't obey."

The practice of head scarf ban which was put into effort in all other
units of MU wasn't launched at the faculty of theology at the same time
with the other faculties due to its position.

The faculty's dean Professor Zekeriya Beyaz was warning the students to
adjust to the regulation related to outward appearance on the day he
was attacked.

On the other hand, while the measures taken by riot police officers in
the faculty continue, students are permitted to enter the faculty after
being given a body search.

The Turkish govt. which wants to be so secular and so modern, why doesn't it realise that it is stripping its citizens of the rights that EVEN the openly kuffaar governments allow their own citizens to? (Not to say that i believe that the Turkish govt. is Muslim of course).
