| bismillah alrhman alrhim alsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu the MSA at my uni is planning to approach the students federation and request an office ...however the MSA is planning to go professional all the way and write up a proposal outlining why we deserve to have an office anyways i was wondering if any of u have any good thoughts in mind that can be included in the proposal? jazakum Allah khayran katheera:o) walsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu |

| alsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu se7en:o) jazaki Allah khayran..i checked out the msa-natl page to find something about obtaining an office but i didn't see anything... it would be great if u could find out what SUNY did.. we have already come up with some good reasons but the more the better right?..and besides we don't want to go into this blind ...and it would be awesome if we could get some pointers from those who have already tred this path i ask Allah ta'ala to keep us all on the straight path always:o) walsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu |

| Salaamalaikum We have three rooms for Muslims at my university- one for brothers, one for sisters, and one for storage. We've had them for many years, long before I came. We're trying to get one big space now because our offices aren't enough for prayer. Most student organizations that have offices at my university are quite big, and have lots of activities. If your MSA meets often and has a lot of events, esp. for the general university community, you should mention that in your proposal. At my university, there are A LOT of Muslims and it helps to mention that -we are trying to get zabiha food served in the cafeteria (make dua'a that it happens) and the people at dining services cooperate so well with us alhamdulilah. But things are different at different universities... you should become friendly with the people in charge of providing services to student organizations because it helps a lot :) -Fatoosh |

| alsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu well the msa spoke to someone concerning the office and found out thats its actually not a matter of why we deserve it ..but that there's a waiting list and that we should get our group on it asap in hopes of an office...see our university is doing a lot of building on campus and as soon as there is an opening insha'Allah it will work out but anyways here are some ideas we came up with -we are one of the most active groups on campus -muslims are the most terrorised people in the world (this point was supposed to be an argument against why the 'pride center'(alternative lifestyles people) have an office-they say because they are the most discriminated against group?) -we are the third largest group on campus and increasing -there is a pastoral office at the uni and muslims deserve the service of having an available imam to consult -many muslims complain about the msa being hard to contact because they don't even know about it when they first start uni...some people just aren't around when our events are -we need a place to store materials ..ie for da3wa and events -it would be a full time info office..people could come and consult the msa with their q's and maybe we could have books for people to borrow? -a mini-msa library? thats all i can remember right now..we got in touch with msa-natl and they gave us some pointers: -find out who the other groups are and have an all execs mtg. go to the other faith groups and cultural groups. at that mtg indicate that you need an office as it would help in the adminstration of the organization, a place to store materials, etc. if you get the other groups involved in this then you can all have a joint petition. -also prepare a petition or a list of msa members so that the adminstration can see that you have a very large presence on campus -next indicate the services that you could possibly provide to muslim students that would warrant you to have an office: a distress line for specifically muslim students would be a good reason -this would also have to be backed up with factual information -find out what services york msa (masha'Allah they are very active)office provides. compile a list of these -if you prepare all this in advance it will indicate that you are serious and are not likely to be turned way. -now for going to the groups that do have offices. ask them how they got and on what basis. remember you have to provide [a] service[s] that a number of students could benefit from. go to people you trust who will not burst the bubble to the administration that you are looking into this. go to ALL clubs that have an office, even ones you don't want to go to. -be prepared for all arguments from the administration. also look into the uof o policy on this and know it inside and out. consider conulting a lawyer-friend who could tell you more from a human rights perspective. -Remember: be patient you will persevere |
