How come and What happened riddles

Many of you have probably seen these type of riddles/games before, for those that haven't, let's see if you can figure it out, it requires you to think in interesting and different ways.  I'll start with an easy one.

1.  A man lives on the twelfth floor of an apartment building. Every morning he takes the elevator down to the lobby and leaves the building. In the evening, he gets into the elevator, and, if there is someone else in the elevator -- or if it was raining that day -- he goes back to his floor directly. However, if there is nobody else in the elevator and it hasn't rained, he goes to the tenth floor and walks up two flights of stairs to his room.

How come? Explain.

Assalamualaikum
sis Malika, I think mine blew a long time ago :) (I think it was around the time br. Abu Khaled posted his riddles :))
hmmmmmmm, to this one, all that's going on through my mind is :this guy need some exercise, he always takes the elevator and probably has a desk job, so on the way back he decides that he should at least burn some extra calories by climbing a few stairs. If its raining, he's probably wet and wants to get into something dry so goes directly home.

OKOK....I know what you'll are thinking: this girl is really dumb and doesn't know what she's talking about. So I'll just go back to doing what i do best, sit quietly in the corner and observe. :)
Perhaps its a custom of his country?
hehehe, nope, but that was interesting. its actually very logical.  think about it carefully and the weather and why he might behave differently because of the weather.  :)

the answer is coming soon.

Salam,

Maybe the elevator doors open to an outdoor space(like a motel type setting)...and if u take the stairs...u'll be outside...and so if it rains, you don't do it?  I don't know, that still wouldn't explain why he doesn't just directly go to his floor.  Maybe perhaps he does something shady on the tenth floor and doesn't want anyone to see/know and thats why he can't get off there when other people are on the elevator??

maybe.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Maybe perhaps he does something shady on the tenth floor...

Haha, this crossed my mind also :D The exercise thing also crossed my mind. Maybe he has to get some exercise done, but when it is raining he takes the car/bus/whatever home instead of walking. And the person in the elevator is the person with whom he came home with ?? Just guessing. Or he has to fetch water from the tenth floor... :)

Arshad, you know I live on the twelfth floor and don't think this sounds logical. If I followed this rule people would think I am crazy!

Okay, let us know what the answer is. Next time inshallah we will do better once we know how this works :)

Wasalaam.

Asalaamu Alaikum  :)

The more I think about this riddle the more I think about how fit this guy must be if he walks up two flights of stairs each day and whether he makes sure he is not alone with a non mahram woman when he's in the elevator :D

My "clutching at straws" answer was that apartment policy dictated that if you lived on the 12th floor you had to get off at Floor 10 and walk up but a concession was given to you when it rained or if someone was sharing the lift with you.

Amazing the sort of rubbish you can come up with when you haven't got a clue :)

Ok.  The only thing that I can think of is this ...

The guy is too short to hit the 12th floor button.  The highest thing he can touch is 10th.  So he gets off on the 10th floor whenever there is nobody with him in the elevator.  When there is someone else with him, he just asks them to hit the 12th floor button for him.

When it's raining, he has his umbrella, and he uses that to hit the 12th floor button.  When it's not raining, he doesn't have the umbrella, and so he can't hit the 12th floor button.

I don't know if this is the answer you were looking for, but it explains the riddle!

Wassalamu alaikum.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Wow Arsalan, that required an imagination out of this world!

I am thinking...the short guy must be real humble for putting up with this hassle, otherwise he would have sued the elevator company/building operator for some big bucks! :)

For those who haven't heard the answer to this before, any idea?
A black dog stands in the middle of an intersection in a town painted black. None of the street lights are working due to a power failure caused by a storm. A car with two broken headlights drives towards the dog but turns in time to avoid hitting him.

How could the driver have seen the dog in time?

With all this talk of hocus pocus and magic, I thought the above was a good reminder.

Okay follow me through my thought process for a second.

The author of this riddle has to try and conjure up a story to effectively pull the wool over your eyes that is in fact daytime. I wonder what our reaction would have been if we had been asked the following:

A dog stands in the middle of an intersection.

A car drives towards the dog but turns in time to avoid hitting him.

How could the driver have seen the dog in time?

I would suggest most of us would have said something along the lines of:

"Duh !! What do you mean how could he have seen him? The dog's right in front of him!!!"

[ Actually may be the Cali people would have said "dude" instead of  "duh" and the Brits "mate" but we won't go there right now ;-) ]

My point being that the author can't *deny* the fact that its daytime. All he can do is *hide* it by creating a story and try to convince people that its night by mentioning things like:

A *black* dog

A town painted *black*

The absence of street lights due to power failure

The broken car headlights

All these facts are here to deceive and distract the reader and in this case, quite literally, to try and make white seem black.

So what's my point?

Well if we can be fooled on such a small scale, could this kind of deception take place on a grander scale?

Could we be fooled in such a way that in our lives we see black instead of white?

"O men! Certainly the promise of Allah is true. Let not then this present life deceive you, nor let the Chief Deceiver deceive you about Allah.

Verily Satan is an enemy to you: so treat him as an enemy. He only invites his adherents, that they may become Companions of the Blazing Fire." [35:5-6]

To me, the riddle reminds me of how the Chief Deceiver [Satan] operates by trying to pull the wool over our eyes. It emphasises the importance of seeing the big picture and not just the picture someone happens to paint for us.

Okay I think I've now thought waaaaaaay too much about this riddle ;-)
