Need Info on Bahrain

Assalaamulaikum Brothers & Sisters. I was wondering if any of you know about Bahrain with regards to Islam being practiced there. One person referred to it as the place "where Saudis go to get drunk." Is this accurate or is this a country where the people are practicing Muslims and it would be a good atmosphere to raise a family in. My brother has the option of moving his family there and he wanted to get some info from me. I would appreciate any info on this matter, especially personal experiences and/or websites that would be useful.

That is what my sister tells me also. She has been living there for several years. Bahrain is probably the most socially 'open' society in the middle east. It looks and behaves more like a US city than an Islamic society. However, as it does have a Muslim population islamic institutions are well-developed (mosques, schools, etc) unlike in many US cities.

I will IM the email address of my brother-in-law. Inshallah, he can answer your questions better.

Wasalaam.

Asalaamalaikum wr wb,was born and raised in Bahrain.  I live in Houston, Texas now.  Bahrain just like any other place has it's variations (good and bad). I don't consider any GCC country Islamic.  And Bahrain definitely lacks in it's implementation of the Shariah, mainly because like the other gulf states, it has a monarch (the kingdom has been passed on within the family for quite a while).  The population in Bahrian enjoys a majority (60% or more) of our Shia brethren and the rest is Sunni including the ruling class.  Also, included in the minority are people from all over the globe.  White foreign folk enjoy priviliges including access to the "royal" family's beach.  atmostphere is relaxed for the most part and I hardly ever came across any problems on the island.  There are plenty of mainstream mosques to pray in.  The Grand mosque (one of the most beautiful mosques in Bahrain), if lucky, fills up it's first row during Isha and Maghrib.  It can facilitate over 5000 people.  are plenty of malls, souks, and a variety of restaurants.  The quality of food is excellent and generally inexpensive.  In the past decade, numerous night-clubs and bars have propped up.  I guess demand fuels supply.  And not all visitors to these places are "Saudis".  country is quite "modern" at least as far as it's infrastructure goes.  You can get things done fairly quickly. However, if you have "connections", things can be done at a tremendous pace.  I always get upgraded to a First class seat on my way to the US (my friend works for the airlines).  you stay out of trouble (i.e. don't start an islamic revival, don't question a prince if he wants to drive your car for the evening, etc.), you will be fine.  To know Arabic is a plus on the island (or I guess anywhere).  Also, there are a couple of good schools for kids.  There is an Indian, American and British school and a couple more.  There is however not a single recognized Islamic institution (which teaches traditional islamic sciences), kinda pathetic isn't it?  Well anyways, hope that helps.  If you have any questions email me or post it on the board.  amanallah.

Assalaamu alaikum,

This is a sign of a bad society! I just don't like places where you need "connections" to get your due right. If you have connections you can get things done faster; if not, tough luck. If you have connections you can get favors; if not, too bad. That is not how it is supposed to be. Lack of equality and justice is the root cause of many problems.

Okay, this is a general comment about how I feel about this and not particularly against Bahrain. Actually, many countries have this problem.

Asalaamu Alaikum  :)

I guess what most people should do if they have these so called "connections" is decide whether its right and permissible for them to use them.

If as with other things, such as intelligence and wealth, Allah [swt] has blessed you with family/friends who can pull a few strings now and then, you should realise that ultimately you well be held to account for the manner in which you used this favour.

As for corruption, well that's a different story altogether unfortunately :(

Assalam u Alikum,
Well,I am not so informative but I was born in Bahrain and half of my mom's family is still there so we often go visit them.
I would say that the neccessity to use "connections" is not only there but in every otehr place. And if u talk abt night clubs and sinful places like that, its definetly better than USA. I personally have never seen anything like that which does not mean they dont exist. BUt our relatives live in the main city and not the subarbs and u can see almost all Muslim population with the exception of a few tourists checking out the bazaars. Alhamdulillah, my relatives practice Islam and send their kids to the masajid for the study of quran so I would say it just depends on where ur brother lives. Its not bad at all. I am not sure if I have the right info or not, but I heard that ppl even smuggle alcoholic beverages to Saudi in a very dis-respectful manner which I dont want to post here since I am not sure of its authenticity. Rest, Bro Amanallah has given so much better description than me and Allah knows best.
Wa'asalam :)
