Foster Care

A sister I know who does foster care told me that the agency has several muslim children that need to be placed.

Maybe I am out of it but Why??  Where are the parents?  I don't mean to sound sooo unintelligent but I am really flabbergasted!  I won't mention the location but I will give a clue...Upstate.

Isn't this a sin?  I think this has to be the muslim parents who maybe entered Islam for the wrong reasons?  Bitter about a break up and the child must suffer?  What??

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

Sis I don't know what to tell you.  That's really sad.  What's even more sad is that the children will probably be placed in Christian homes, and they'll most likely lose any sort of Muslim identity they have.

I know of one case in which some Muslim children were taken away from their parents because of some accusations of abuse, but the children were not abused.  They were placed in a Christian foster home, and last I heard of the story was that they were still in court fighting to get their children back.

But in truth there are other reasons that could happen, the mother giving the child up for adoption, parents being unfit to care for their kids, things like that.

Assalamu alaikum,

There are muslim children in the care of the Children's Aid Society (CAS) in my community. There is also an active and a relatively new muslim women's organization here which has initiated dialogue with workers in CAS about those muslim children.  We know one muslim social worker there and he is masha'Allah trying to increase awareness about the special needs of muslim children in foster care.

But the fact of the matter remains that there are many muslim parents who do abuse their children and their children have to be removed from their care.  This muslim women group I am involved with is looking into educating our community about this issue and hopefully intice Muslim families to obtain certification of CAS so that they can take muslim foster children into their care. It is a big problem here, as there are currently 13 muslim children in the care of our region's CAS.

Sis Malika, I will give an example of why there are children in the care of CAS.  A few years ago, there was a girl in grade school who was 'caught' by one of her parents chatting online with a boy.  That was all..just chatting.  The father didn't know how to punish his daughter so he consulted the imam of his community mosque.  He was advised that his daughter has committed fornication and that proper punishment was flogging.  He went back home and  did just that.  The school of that girl found out about what happenned and reported the case to the local police and children's aid society.  Since then, the girl has been removed from her family and placed in the care of CAS.  So in answer to your question about the whereabouts of the parents...you tell me?

Wassalam
