walaikum salaam wrt, it's rather odd really that it takes so much time to load. you'd think those images would be cached and wouldn't have to be reloaded each time, but it seems like since it's cgi it's loading all the stuff every time!

AsalamAlay.com,     Once upon a time,     HiMY made a short story long....     When one visits a 'static' or fixed HTML page     It's the exact same page every time the user's     browser visits or loads that specific page.     Hence, Yes, the images jpgs/gifs/pngs/etc     ARE indeed cached and recycled next visit.     However, without using a bit of tricky HTML     to fool the browser, EVERY time we do anything     once we are logged in to the Madinah Community,     EVERY page is seen as a different NEW HTML     page. Using cookies allows us to customize     every HIT. Hence, even if all we did was     visit the main Jannah.org/board page, then     visit any one of the forums, thirdly then     when we return to the Main jannah.org/board     page, the cookie is updated and the "new"     yellow icon gif is removed from THAT single     forum name.     As far as the browser is concerned, the     cookie's data is telling it that the ENTIRE     page is a DIFFERENT HTML page.     Therefore it RE-Loads EVERY image....     Again and Again and Again.     Ironically, if we just visit the board,     WITHOUT logging in, the images are     displayed from cache memory and not     re-downloaded offa the website.       http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com     This weirdly named url is a good site     to begin learning how to optimize images.     ~ HiMY! ~

Assalaamu alaikum, Hmmm...the wait for me is mostly the time to process the cgi script. The script reads through some files on the server to generate the tables representing the forums and threads. The top image loads immediately but the table sometimes take longer when the server is busy. You can notice this when many people are logged in and are posting concurrently. I guess as the size of the board increases this processing time will also increase. The static size of the page is not large (~ 40 KB with all images). The delay is often the processing time for the cgi and not the download time. Wasalaam.

slm This probably doesn't have anything to do with anything but yesterday there were 313 members today there is only 210.  Was it that many non users. Nomads if you will who thought they could blend in the (what is the computer term I'm looking for?) another nothing to do with nothing... when do I move from being a geek!  I'm too embarassed to tell my son his mom is a geek (and she likes it)!

Formatting is not good or what? I use Netscape only on Linux which these days I am not using frequently.

slm, i agree... netscape was ok at version 3... after that it got slower and worse... ie3 was ok too, but ie4 is what really got me hooked.. yes, i agree microsoft isnt exactly on the top of the 'quality producer' list, but ie just works bets for me.. its faster, and has less problems.. and it integrates well with windows, so theres not a whole lot of separate configuring and installing of plugins... if you have media player, then most of your basic media plugins are takenn care of :) speakin of slow, ns6 takes a full 15-20 seconds to load when i open it... and my computer is not incredibly slow... ie takes 5 seconds max :) and the whole site looks fine when i use ie... the main difference is the clor of the border on the tables.. its white in ns, and black in ie. neway, to each his own ;-D ... ma'salaam :)

If they are shy they can read the posts without a login. Just sitting there takes up room on the server as well nicknames that other ppl can take. Most had not even logged in once. I wonder why they register then?

slm, hmmm... maybe the script would need a little more modifying than just telling it to subtract 12 if the hour is greater than 12... cause i know its definitely possible to get it to say am and pm... the only thing is it would also involve modifying it to add the am and pm to everywhere the time is displayed on the board.. so um, thats probably too much trouble, and in that case i'll just hush up now ;-D btw... are you planning to upgrade yabb soon? and also this page has some cool hacks: http://yabbhacks.hypermart.net/ :) ma'salaam :)

salaam, this isn't yabb version 1 final it's a much older version that has been modified for the purposes of this board if we install that other version it will take months to fix all the scripts to get the board the way it works here i think until we find there is an overwhelming need to replace this version with the new one we'll stay with this one which works and we know all the bugs for it etc but i'll check out that date hack and see if i can fix it. i'm no perl expert and i've broken the board many times b4 but doesn't hurt to try right :0

Assalaamu alaikum, I think you guys are making a big deal about the time format change. The military format is just fine. The purpose of the time is to determine the relative times at which each message is posted. Even with the AM/PM format (hwich btw is not working properly right now), a majority of people will still have to add and subtract from the posted times to determine the time at their location. And it is easier to add and subtract when using the 24 hour format than the 12 hour format. Also, keep the seconds. I remember Jannah once replied to one of my message in 40s, which is kind of a record. It would be interesting to see who can beat that! :) Wasalaam.

hmm if it wasn't working before it might stop working tomorrow at around the same times.. there must be something with the algorithm i just put in if time < 12 then add the AM if time > 12 then add PM and - 12 pain for not much gain eh!
