salaam,

my questions are regarding salaat.

#1  when going down for ruku and sujood do men and women have to do takbir, is this sunnah or is it mandatory?

#2 I know that while praying in jamaath the men switch places after reading the fard salaat. do the women have to do this too?  If so, do you
have to do it when you're praying alone and what's the reason for it?

Assalam-u-Alaikum,

I'll try and answer whatever I can Insha-Allah.

#1. When going down for rukoo and sujood one must say takbeer, "Allahu Akbar".  Not only then, but between just about every movement of the body in Salah, takbeer should be said (except when coming up from rukoo).  Whether this is mandatory or suunah I can not say, but surely you'd want an A+ salah rather than a B-.  However, to my knowledge I do not think that the Prophet (SAW) ever prayed a Salah in which he did not say takbeer in the movements that you mentioned.  Both men and women have to do this.  To my knowledge the only difference between men and womens' salah is the manner of clothing, is this correct?

#2. To my knowledge switching the places after Fard salah is so that you have as many individual places of worship as possible.  I do not think that it is mandatory.  However, it is better to pray your sunna and nawafil salahs at home rather than in the masjid.  The Prophet (SAW) once said that the best places of worship for all prayers except the fard prayers is in the home.

I hope that answers the questions.  If you have any confusion or have more questions, please ask... we all need the ajr!

Wassalam-u-Alaikum

"#1  when going down for ruku and sujood do men and women have to do takbir, is this sunnah or is it mandatory?"
As salaamu alaykum, this first question can be divided into two parts, the first being; "is takbir, when going down in ruku and sujood sunnah or mandatory?", and secondly "does this apply also to women?".
As for the first one, it has been established from the sunnah of the messenger {saw} that he used to make the takbeer and also raise his hands in the following places in salat: 1.) when making the takbeerat al-ihram (the takbeer at the beginning of the prayer), (al-Bukhaari and al-Nisaa’i)

2.) When he had finished reciting qur’aan, he would pause for a moment then raise his hands, say takbeer and do rukoo’.

3.) and  The Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say takbeer when he got up for the third rak’ah {after the first at-tashahud}  (reported by al-Bukhaari and Muslim), and he would raise his hands sometimes when he said this takbeer. (al-Bukhaari and Abu Dawood).

Hence, it is from the clearly established sunnah that the messenger {saw} used to make takbeer for every bowing and raising, as ibn Masood narrated in the sunan  At Tirmidhee and Abu Dawud in an authentic hadeeth that " I saw the messenger {saw} used to make takbeer for every bowing and raising, standing and sitting".
Thus, the scholars have said that making takbear for every change of position in salat is wajib {mandatory}, except when raising from ruku {in this case one says "samiallahu liman hamidah"}.

"#2 I know that while praying in jamaath the men switch places after reading the fard salaat. do the women have to do this too?  If so, do you
have to do it when you're praying alone and what's the reason for it?", to my knowledge there is no authentic hadeeth to refer back as a proof of this action, but rather i read {i think in the explaination of sunan Abu Dawud} that some scholars of fiqh say that  it is good if one moves from the spot they lead the salat in (the imam), so that those who come late would will not be confused and they will know that the salat is over. But as i said this is what some of them say, as for their evidence and proofs, Allah knows best where they get this from.

 As regard to women the rasul said "pray as you see me pray" {Al Bukhari}, hence the scholars of fiqh have  a very beneficial rule which can save you alot of time and energy when it comes to issues like these and that is: "whatever rulings applies to men, also applies to women, except if there is a proof {from the quran or sunnah} to state otherwise", hence this way we killed two birds with one stone. And "Thus is the case judged concerning which you both did inquire." {Yusuf:41}
