Getting in shape!

slm!

*ouch*

Ok, I'm hurting, I'm tired, but I'm determined!!  Lately, I guess over the past couple of years (since I've been in college) I've noticed my eating habits are BAD and my exercise habits are NON-EXISTENT. Well, I've let it slide for this long, but with my upcoming marriage (Insha'Allah), I've decided to kick it into high gear and shape up!  Oh believe me, its easier said than done :(  Anyways, this week marks the first week (ever) of my exercise routine.  And so far, here is what I've done:

I ran and/or <walked> on our treadmill twice... I started carrying around a bottle of water (and drinking the water therein), I have done about a total of 150 crunches (in the duration of a week mind you :) ) and today, I went out and bought this cool exercise wheel thingy and two 5 lb hand weights!! (I was very excited about my purchases)

Sooo, my question is this.  How many of you ladies have an *effective* exercise/diet regime?  And even if you don't, how many of you know any cool things I can do to get in shape? Oh, and how many of you have that exercise wheel?? MAAAAAAN, it hurts!!! :(  But, baby you can feel the burn! :)  Ok, please get back to me soon! I mean, I have 11 months to prepare, but I have no will power when it comes to these things, so I have to take it slooooow. Anyways, I'm going to go give my wheel/weights another go!  Wish me luck!! :)

Wassalam, and thanks in advance!!

wa alaykum alsalam wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu

masha'Allah nazia u seem pretty determined :).....the best advice i can give u is to not change that..sometimes u'll be like 'hmm i've done a lot so why not take a break for a few days' ..na'a bad idea....keep going until ur in shape and then the fact that u made it will keep u going insha'Allah

and u want an effective diet/exercise? ...well i did this for a while and it helps a lot.....eat healthy..no junk -it tends to make u go nowhere kinda fast..just don't over do it....eat lotsa fruits and veggies and healthy stuff...it will make u feel a lot better about urself and give u more energy to do the work-outs ..and DON't stuff urself when u eat...do as the rasul (pbuh) did..1/3 for food..1/3 for liquid..1/3 for air..and don't eat too late at night past 7-8pm is a good limit...hmmm and exercise? ...well aerobics will get u in gear ..with some weights on the side ....a friend of mine has been just doing tei bo for the last little while and i am amazed by the results masha'Allah ....sooo maybe try tei bo? ...

those are my suggestions....and one more thing..if u don feel like doing a work out all the time....alternate by taking 30min walks some days etc...

also some people tend to exercise with a buddy and that helps for encouragement ..?

hope that helps nazia

ps...don't over-do the work outs..cuz might hurt urself...do what u can and then ur endurance will tend to increase  by itself:)

Nazia.. ever heard of the freshman 15? :) (It's the 15 pounds every freshman gains in college!)

The best exercise is walking. It's simple, easy you don't need any equipment.. You just go! At least a half hour to 45 minutes a day I'd shoot for.

Junk food, yup you have to ban yourself from junk food.. make yourself eat healthy alternatives.. a banana or strawberries instead of chips. You have to eat less too, try just a bagel for breakfast, a very light lunch and a dinner. Try not to snack in between.

BTW you will not lose weight if you starve yourself and don't exercise ( I learned this :)) You need BOTH.

Try getting one of those TaeBo tapes, Pilates, Jennifer Kries or any exercise tape really and do that every day in your basement or something.. You'll see results!

<the next day>

Assalamu Alaikum,

Phew, I survived! But just barely.  Man, I cannot tell you how sore I am!  This morning before I came to work I had to get my mom to massage my back and shoulders!! haha.. But its good, Alhamdulillah.  If I wasn't sore, I'd definitely know I wasn't doing it right.  Anyways, yeah, the no junk food thing is the hardest for me. I make such good intentions, (ie-I will only eat 3 meals a day, each will be light and healthy) and then BOOM theyre offering free pizza and cookies at school! :( I could have very easily avoided it, I was supposed to be in class when it was being served! Buuut, I begged the professor to cancel class..and he listened to me!! Who'd a known??
(It's a small class...senior design)
But man, do you guys see the analogy to life thats unfolding?  Here we are, trying to be good Muslims, and everywhere...all we see is "FREE PIZZA!" And then we go out of our way to eat it!

*sigh*

Take heed girls..Everyone is out to get u!

I'll let you know when I have abs of steel. <Don't hold your breath :)>

Take Care,
wassalam,
Nazia

Nazia you doing great keep it up.

I have the abs wheel and it works as long as you don't fall off the horse (I fell off but I'm getting up now ;)) InshaAllah by spring I should be halfway to my goal.

Salaam,

Walking (fast) is definitely a good way to loose weight.  No matter where you go, try to walk fast; it will become a habit.  Avoid the bus or
the car if you can walk.  Avoid the elevators too and use the stairs.  Another thing I do is 15-20 sit-ups after every salah.  So at the end of the day, you made not far from a hundred sit-ups.  You can do the same with push-ups.

Good luck!

P.S.: Someone suggested exercise tapes; I advise you not to buy tapes in which people show their awrah.

Congratulations Nazia on your soon-to-be marriage, insha Allah.

Water, Water, Water!  drink as much of it as you can.  Not only is it crucial for your body, but it will make you less hungry.  When you eat, don't eat too much as the Propet, sallahoo alayhee wa salam, advised-the believer stops eating when he/she is no longer hungry.  Personally, I hate diets-I just watch what I eat.  This way, it never stops, it's just my regular way of eating all the time.  As long as you stay committed to an exercise routine, working out 3-5 times a week, you should be golden.  Outdoor exercise is the best-you'll get in shape faster.  Aerobics is good too.  Even if your too tired to work out, make sure you do something like jumprope for 5 minutes.  Keep yourself in a routine.

Allah Ma'aki!  :)

Assalaamu alaikum,

Okay, lemme venture in here...let's see if I can survive after this...

Sisters hang out in Cafes, and talk about workouts, hehee :) How ironic :)

Here are some simple tips from someone who hangs out in the health club (although doesn't use it for workouts)

1. Drink water! (as others have poined out also). I have noticed that while living in temperate climates we don't drink enough water. Water is good, drink as much as you can.

2. Drastically reduce bebsi (bebsi anonymous members please take note :)) and coffee intake! These drinks are dehydrants removing water from the body. They also make you not feel thirsty.

3. Be simple in your eating habits! Eat only enough to get by, you don't need a three course meal everytime and everyday. Be consistent also in your mealtimes. Don't binge in between :)

4. Eat a lot of fresh fruits! Ah, I miss this here in the US. While in Pakistan and Nigeria we ate tons of fruit (variety, quantity, quality was awesome!) each day. It is good for health and it's filling also.

5. Fast! There is no better way to restrain yourself from junk food. Inshallah, when you fast occasionally this will become a habit. Plus, you get extra points for fasting :)

In general, keep a simple life. Working out after eating heavy is a round-about way of accomplishing something you can achieve by being moderate in all things.

Okay, I suggest we switch names of the brothers and sisters forums: Health club for sisters and pizza house for brothers :)

Wasalaam.

slm,

Thanks guys.  But ok, I have a dilemma!  I exercised *one* day and for the past two days my body has been soooooo sore! I mean seriously.. it hurts to sneeze!! haha. My family is making so much fun of me! But alhamdulillah, the soreness hasn't *totally* stopped me. I can still do some cardio, its just these ab exercises I absolutely CANNOT tackle :( And I'm really sad, because I bought that wheely thingy and I really want to use it!!  Anyways, yeah I'm drinking lots of water, unfortunately, I'm also eating macaroni and cheese and some cake my mom made last night!:(

But yes, khalas, I'm done for the day! No more eating..
Ok, tell me what you guys think about this: I heard that if you eat a *little* throughout the day, instead of 3 major meals..you end up eating less? I know that when I am at school/work, I get sooo hungry, and so when I eat lunch...OH I EAT LUNCH :)  But then usually I don't eat dinner.. But then RIGHT before bed I eat cereal.. Jeez, who let me build up these bad habits!! <it was me!>
Anyways, to the credit of all those who replied to my post, I thought of you all <briefly> before devouring my snacks! :) And I thought, "maybe I shouldn't *chomp* do this, *swallow*, yeah this is definitely not a good idea *chomp chomp*, so I guess I won't do it *burp* hehe..jk, about the burp part.  Anyways, fasting is a good idea! thanx bro.  BTW--if you don't work out at healthclubs...what do you do?!

PS-slimer--freshman 15 is a viable threat...I didn't suffer because I lived at home..but here are my suggestions:  walk to your classes (i drive to all of mine--but so does everyone in my school)  and try to *not* eat out as much as possible (I eat out everyday, sometimes twice) Jeez I'm a hypocrite :)

Assalam ualykum,

i weight a 100 pounds only carrying around 5 feet flat height and lots of cholestrol that shouldn't be there in my body. my doctor told me to excercise if i don't want my arteries clogged when i'm in my 40s. i will get around to it one day inshallah, before i trun 40.  :)

go nazia! good for you.  :)

:) If i gain 15 pounds i will let you know. i'm a freshman and i don't think i have gained any weight, not the last time that i checked anyway. i have noticed that i eat wayyyyy more than i used to. man, i can't believe how hungry i get from class to class. so i alwys grab a cup of coffee and some sort of sanck besides the full meal that i eat during lucnhtime. i really need to cut back on the coffee, i imagine it can't be all that good for you. and bebsi don't help none to make you stay awake during lectures.

What about fasting?  Besides the reward you get insha'Allah for doing it for Allah (SWT), there are many added benifits, such as you don't overeat and it cleans your system.

Assalamu alaikum,

May Allah reward you sis Nazia for your attempt to get in shape in preparation for your upcoming marriage.

I agree with everyone's remarks and tips.  The only thing that I would add in regards to food is to be organized and plan ahead.  Try to cut down on foods with high carbs content like rice, chips, pasta, cakes & cookies.  Prepare veggie snacks ahead of time (salary sticks, cucumber ec) and munch on these at hunger attacks.

About fasting, I agree to its health benefits, but I would rather fast for its reward from Allah. All I am saying that we have to be really careful about our intentions, insha'Allah.

One last tip...stretch!  This will help ease your sore excersice-deprived muscles :)  Really, an easy stretch excersice to do is to try is to stand up, stretch your arms above your head, bend down and touch your toes!  I am 5'9" and believe me my toes are a long way from my hands :) , but I improved with repitition, al-hamdolellah.

assalaamu alaikum,

i'm very happy to see all you bros and sis trying to stay in shape.

as a bro that has been there and done that when it comes to exercise, i'd like to remind ourselves of something that is easily forgotten:

NIYYAH (Intention)!  We should ultimately strive to please Allah SWT in everything we do.  So whether you're doing it to fulfill a right that your body has, to stay healthy, to train for jihad, or to improve your marriage, always keep the intention in mind.  It is very easy to get obsessed with our new "look" and forget the overall purpose.

Remember, Rasulullah SAWS said (paraphrased) "Strive for excellence in whatever you do"

Ikrima.

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,
Jannah, you've got it all wrong.  It's not when you get to be a Freshman that you gain 15 pounds, it's when you get married!!! Ask anybody :)
Nazia, just a few days ago I read something about a Super Slow workout (or slo mo workout) where you make every rep last like 10 seconds or more and do fewer of them.  It gets really really hard to do it, but you do it till your muscles are shaking and exhausted.  You build up huge strength this way.  You only have to do it like 3 times a week cause your muscles need time to rest.  And you think you're sore now!  :)  Do a search on it.  I thought it was very interesting.

hey something i learned today in my biology lessen

exercise is not much use to obease people(i always thought it'd work ??? )
b_cos - after they've exercised they'd want to eat and thus-gain more weight- therefore best thing is to eat less....mmm

nazia let me tell u some of the benifits of exercise which will inshallah motivate u to carry one:

* ur Vital Capacity increase
(VC-the max volume of air that can be breathed in and then out)
so inshallah with an increeased VC u will have the ability to read long verses from the quraan without pausing....(that motivates me :) )

* loss of weight(b4 i was refering to obeasity)
* improved resistance to infection
* reduced risk of CHD(Coronary Heart Disease)
* improving balance, coordination, strength and flexibility(u'll need these when u have kids:) )
* reduced chance of lower back pains-we tend to get when mensturating

and much much moooore :)

Ok, I've been avoiding this thread, because when I read it, I get reminded of how my <non-existent> diet is going. Then I get sad :(  Actually, I think I have amended my eating habits somewhat; I definitely eat out less, and drink lots more water...But exercise? What? Who? hmm.. See, the goal was never to *lose weight* so much as it was to just get in shape.  I mean, its sad, if I'm downstairs, and I run up to my room to get something, I'm out of breath when I come back down! Pathetic!  I know! I'm going to work out now!

Right after I eat ;) hehe..jk!

Hey keep going sis....try try and try again until
you succeed in making exercise a part of life...hmmm :-)

I done some hi/lo impact aerbics yesterday after  several weeks my muscles still ache:-(..
i would reccomend that you try low impact aerobics for a couple of weeks and then move on to hi impact aerobics..

The difference between high and low imapact is that low impact has less vigorous exercise and eases you in to an exercise routine without making your muscles ache.  High impact is for a bit more advanced..I was being ambitious when i thought that a break from exercise didn't mean going back to the basics...

Regular exercise helps believe me :-)

Take care Wasalaam

All about Water . . .

75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
(Likely applies to half world pop.)

In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that
it is often mistaken for hunger.

Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100%
of the dieters studied in a U-Washington medical study.

Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of  water a day
could significantly ease your back and joint pain for up
to 80% of sufferers.

A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory,
trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer
screen or on a printed page.

Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer
by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is
50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?

ASalam-Alaykum.

Tried and true. Hope it helps sister Nazia.

1. Read labels. Don't eat anything with hydrogenated or partially
hydrogenated oils. Entire books are written about the terribly unhealthy
effects of it.

2. Stay away from drinks containing acids (pepsi! coke!). They do
little else than - putting it in common words - tear your insides apart.

3. Don't exercise. You'll stop after the first few days and then get
depressed and gorge yourself on fish and chips to make you happy again.

4. Buy yourself a new pair of Adidas and throw your car keys away.
Start walking. Everywhere.

5. Or buy a bike and cycle yourself to work.

6. Convince yourself that elevators and escalators are evil and that
stairways are God-sent.

7. Stop ignoring kids. Wrestle with them, skate with them, play
hide-and-go-seek with them, build tree houses and snow forts with them, become
one of them again.

8. When you get married, make it clear to your
husband that dishes and
laundry will be his thing, raking and mowing yours.

9. Find something physically tiring you enjoy doing and start doing it.
(Gardening, sports, hiking &so on).

10. Snacks: No more junk food. Get to know the fruits and vegetables
aisle of your grocery store.

11. Visit your local health store every now and then. They have
surprisingly tasty snacks with almost zero calories.:)

13. Unless you have to, don't use the computer too long. If you're
thin, you may stay that way, but watch those muscles turn to flab in no time.

14. Fast Mondays and Thursdays.

15. Start waking for night salah at least once a fortnight, then once a
week, three times a week, and so on. A strong spirit helps to make a
strong body.

16. Don't eat anything unless you (or someone you trust) cooked it.

17. Yes, stock up on water bottles. Even if you seem to be spending all
day on the commode. It is worth it.

Along with the interesting post Jannah mentioned, I found this information about water written by a Muslim Doctor.

6 glasses of water (1.5 litres). Without spending on medicine, tablets, injections, diagnosis, Doctor fees, etc., just by drinking pure water, the following diseases will be cured. You can never believe before practising.

Let us see the list of diseases being cured by this therapy.
Diseases cured by Drinking water

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Headache
2. Blood Pressure/Hyper Tension
3. Anemia (Blood Shortage)
4. Rheumatism (Pain in joints/ muscles)
5. General Paralysis
6. Obesity (Very Fatness)
7. Artheritis
8. Sinusitis
9. Tachycardia
10. Giddiness
11. Cough (Khansi)
12. Asthma
13. Bronchitis
14. Pulminory Tuberculosis (T.B.)
15. Menengitis
16. Kidney stones
17. Urogenital diseases
18. Hyper acidity
19. Gastro-entritis
20. Dysentry
21. Rectal Piodapse
22. Constipation (Kabj)
23. Hostorthobics
24. Diabetes (Madhumeh)
25. Eye diseases
26. Opthelmic Haemorrage & Opthalmia (reddish eye)
27. Irregular Menstration 28. Leucamia (white Blood)
29. uterine cancer 30. Breast cancer 31. Laryngitis

How to do this water therapy?

1) Early morning after you get up from bed (without even
brushing your teeth)drink 1.50 litres of water i.e., 5
to 6 glasses. Better to premeasure 1.50 litres of
water. Let us all know that our ancestors termed this
therapy as "Usha Paana Chikitsa". You may wash your
face thereafter.

2) Here it is very essential to note that nothing else -
neither drinks nor solid food of any sort - should be
taken within 1 hours before and after drinking this
1.50 litres of water.

3) It is also to be strictly observed that no Alcoholic
drinks should be taken the previous night.

4) If required, boiled and filtered water may be used
for this purpose.

Is it possible to drink 1.50 litres of water at one time?

1) To begin with, one may find it difficult to drink 1.50
litres of water at one time, but one will get used to it
gradually.
Initially, while practising you may drink four
glasses first and the balance two glasses after a gap of
two minutes. Initially you may find the necessity to
urinate 2 to 3 times within an hour, but it will become
normal after sometime. By research and experience, the
following diseases are observed to be cured with this
therapy within the indicated days as below:

Constipation 1 day
Acidity 2 days
Diabetes 7 days
BP & Hypertension 4 weeks
Cancer 4 weeks
Pulminory TB 3 months

Note:

It is advised that persons suffering from Artheritis or
Rheumatism should practise this therapy thrice a day,
i.e.,morning, midday and night, 1 hours before meals -
for one week; and twice a day subsequently till the disease is
cured.

How does pure water act?

Consuming ordinary drinking water by the right method
purifies human body. It renders the colon more effective
by forming new fresh blood, known in medical terms as
Haematopaises. That the mucousal folds of the colon and
intestines are activated by this method, is an undisputed
fact, just as the theory that new fresh blood is
produced by the mucousal fold.

If the colon is cleaned then the nutrients of the food
taken several times a day will be absorbed and by the
action of the mucousal folds they are turned into fresh
blood. The blood is all important in curing ailments and
restoring health, and for this water should be consumed in a
regular pattern. We make an earnest request that the above
method should be read and practised carefully.

I'm all for drinking water...but it really gets to me...literally...I need to find a bathroom almost constantly when I up my water intake...any suggestions on this problem???? [/quote]

Assalamu alaikum
This happens to me as well, and its so irritating to want to use the bathroom right in the middle of something. Here's one thing I'd read a while ago..its basically to incorporate the water drinking inpo ur daily routine at specified times and not just sipping a little all the time. OK..early in the morning before eating anything, drink about two glasses of water and check how long it takes  you to go to the bathroom after that...thats basically how long ur body will retain the water...and once u know that u can just drink lots of water prior to that much amount of time when ull be relatively free...ok lemme explain that with an example...suppose the "water retention time" is two hours..and u go to work at 8 and take a coffee break at 10 and a lunch break around 1....u can drink water before u leave so then u can use the bathroom at ur break at 10 and then drink more water at 11 and again go at 1 :) This way u can sort of regulate the time when u'll want to use the bathroom..its a whole lot better than wanting to go in the middle of any important meeting or class!
I haven't tried this out for myself ..so even though it sound workable in theory I don't know how it is in practice....if anyone does try it let us know if it works

wassalam

Assalaamu-alaikum!

After reading this thread, i come to the conclusion that a lot of you are FAT sisters :0)

Get you and do some exercise, and real exercise! Not walking! Thats for old men and women ;-)

Being overweight is no excuse people. Its because we eat too much. Even the most obese, their as big as they are because they eat more calories than they use up!

So start exercising, and that goes for the bro's as well!

Cut the burgers will you! Their for me!

Sisters, and Brothers, I don't feel this comment even needs to be addressed. For all of you who want to lose weight, or exercise for the health benefits, go for it. May Allah (swt) reward all of you for your efforts. :)

I won't comment any further!

Serena

Assalamu Alaikum,

I figured out a cool diet regime.  Check it.

If you're out of the house for the day, (school, work, etc):

Pack a healthy lunch (sandwich, fruits, veggies)
Theenn... OFFER EVERYONE around you some of your food!!  Not only are you getting sadaqah for sharing, but you're eating a lot less!

Well, drink your lunch down with a bottle of water.  And I gurantee you won't be hungry...for awhile :)

Oh yeah, don't eat all of your lunch at once.  Let me tell you why.  If all your food is gone, then about three hours after your initial munch-fest, you're going to be hungry again!  And if you don't have anymore of your healthy lunch, you know what you're going to do?? GO STRAIGHT TO THE SNACK MACHINE to buy chips/chocolate etc!  Sooo, make sure you leave a few carrots/apples/strawberries to eat later.  *IF* you gave away too much of your food (make sure you give away the unhealthiest stuff first--the recipients will appreciate it more :)  ) then the only thing you can do is leave all your cash in the car :)  (I live in a safe city, ALhamdulillah)  Anyways, if my cash is in the car, I can't go to the snack machine--and I wouldn't feel right borrowing money everyday..therefore...i don't eat junk!

Its ingenious!

This diet is mainly for the "will-power impaired" hehe..it works quite well.. I'm thinking about patenting it.

Take Care,wassalam,
Nazia

Have you tried a calorie counting diet?

Research has shown that one of the best diets is a calorie-counting diet. And no, we don't have to be live like aneroxics!

Apparently the average adult would consume about 2000++ calories per day to maintain the same weight. But if we are to consume about 1000 calories, then, we can actually see a significant change in our weight. But of course, couple it with exercise, for better and more enduring results inshaAllah.

My friends (colleagues) tried it and are still doing it and mashaALlah... there are results... and of course, they exercise like about 2x per week.

If U wanna lose weight, it's also good to do exercises that target muscle groups, besides the ordinary cardio ones. Hence, try and go to the gym, and try each equipment for different muscle group for about 10 minutes, about 2x per week. Alternatively, U can go for aerobics that is not low impact, but the ones that target muscle groups. I don't know if U have "Amore" there, but if U do, they have aerobics called New Body.

ANother kind of diet that U can do is called the Hayes (sp?) diet. ie. stay away from carbo-protein combination foods like rice and chicken (yes, difficult, I know)... and instead, have either carbo-veg. or protein-veg. meals. I don't have the scientific evidence with me right now, but somehow, it's gotta do with the digestive system, I think.

Ok, sorry for my ramblings.. but I'll post up a cool website to help out for HEALTHY weight-loss...

And yes, I've tried all that... with EXTREME difficulty (naah, I'm just not consistent with my diet!), but unlike my other colleagues, there seems to be no results for me but I feel healthier, though, alhamdulillah)... but don't lose hope! I'm in the minority... my weight has been constant eversince my major weight-gain 7 years ago after being underweight all my life!

All the best!  :)

My experience is that if you drink more water consistently, your body gets used to it and you won't need to go to the bathroom so often.  For me, it took about three weeks before I stopped having to look for a washroom almost instantly after drinking.  Now things are back to the way they always were.

wlm

p.s. only one type of diabetes could possibly be cured by drinking more water (in this case, I think it because it acts as an appetite suppressant).  The other type cannot be cured no matter how much liquid you consume.

asalaam alaikum friends -

wow! can water really do all that much? anyone been following the water plan who can let me know if it actually worked for them...?

hmm maybe im one of those poor helplessly weak people who succumb to fake "hunger spasms" when its really my body craving a nice tall glass of water...hmm, something to think about....also, does fasting really make you lose weight? because once you go to sleep after sehri and fajr time, the food just lays in your stomach, not really digesting; im unsure on how that would help with the whole weight dilemma ?

comments appreciated...Allah hafiz ;)
