| salaam my quesiton is about ilm. I know that it is fard to seek deeni ilm but what about dunya (wordly) knowledge. With this i'm referring to college and the like. Do you get rewarded for furthering your education? |

| you definitely get a higher average salary if you have a masters and it looks better too :) if you are business minded an MBA goes a HUGEEEE way of furthering your salary. for anything else most companies will even PAY for you to go to school and get a masters |

| Rasullalah SAS strongly encouraged literacy and freed prisoners of Badr who agreed to teach ten Muslims to read. Literacy of course is a means to attain worldly knowledge as well as knowledge of the deen. Worldly knowledge, like everything else in this world, is a means to an end. A means, for example, to acquire the skills for an occupation to please Allah. Or a means, perhaps, to further explore Allah's creation and increase taqwa. All labor that we do, whether physical or mental, is an act of worship, provided we have the right intention. Rasulallah SAS said that he who sleeps with his hand tired of work will have his sins forgiven. So our labor is rewarded in akhirah. Being proficient in one's work and understanding Allah's creation better through education is an appreciation of Allah's bounty. Using these bounties benefits both the individual and society and facilitates the goals of the Shar'iah to advance the general welfare of the ummah. All of these are acts which can be used to glorify and worship Allah SWT. So the means we use to reach these righteous goals will be rewarded as well. It's like walking to the masjid for salah. We get rewards for each step on the way to achieving our goal of performing salah and worshiping Allah. it's all intentions... wa alaikum salam |

| Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah This is a nice dua I read on a pamphlet handed out at the masjid : Allaahumma anfi'nee bima a'llamtanee, wa a'llimnee ma yanfa'unee, wa zidnee ilmaa roughly translated it's : O Allah, benefit me from what you have taught me and teach me that which will benefit me and increase me in my knowledge. wassalam |

| slm Like somebody just said it depends upon your niya,if your niya is to become a strong muslim and help your other muslim brothers,or your niya is to make the ummah stronger,then every single thing you do towards that science will be counted for you.But if your niya is to become a known doctor or a great lawyer,then your niya is to what it was.Remember the first hadeeth of the Nawawi hadeeths? "Actions are but by intention,and every man shall have but that which he intended.Thus he whose migration was for Allah and His Messenger,his migration waa for ALlah and His Messenger.And he whose migration was TO ACHIEVE SOME WORLDLY BENEFIT,or to take some woman in marriage,his migration was for that for which he migrated."(Bukhary,muslim,Abu dawood,al-Tirmithy,al-Nissaai). |

I live on the other side of the Atlantic and have not had the good fortune to listen to any of his talks. Kathy, my feelings exactly, I "fell in love" with it when I first read it. | Assala-mo-alai-kum I personally think in Islam true and real Ilm means that Ilm or knowledge which guide human beings in understanding Ma'arafat-e-Ilahi. And basically this come through thorough knowledge of Quran and Hadith and it's implemetation in practial way. We heard and read the period of Jaahaliya. It is so called because knowledge seeking and understanding the Creator was non-existent with the passage of time after Hazrat Isa AWAS till darkness reign over the whole World. And when such knowledge was unavailable people turn to idol worshipping. Perhaps the worldly education might be or might not be helpful in Akhira depending niya and how it was used vis-a-vis Islam. But the Ilm of Quran and Hadith will become benefecial from death till abdul-aabaad or eternity. |

| I believe worldly knowledge is of fardh-kifayah,which is a requirement for any healthy society islamic or not. However if you reflect about knowledge in general, you will find that what we learn here in the west has a lot to do with discovery and not learning. Yet as Muslims we believe that truth is learnt and not discovered. Discovery is for people obsessed with science and progress. And the march towards progress is an obsession that sees the past as underdeveloped. So we march forward for the betterment of human life and in this eternal social project life becomes of no value, there will never be peace and no wisdom, no history and nothing to teach since new development may invalidate any old fragment of knowledge as Allan Bloom tells us in "The Closing of the American Mind." I heard a couple of years ago that A Muslim should not really dive deep enough in knowledge that puts him in a lab doing some kind of discovery or such and taking up most or all of his time without really having any benefit to the ummah. Also this type of knowledge is highly compartmentalized such that you are extremely versed in one thing and totally ignorant in everything else including the knowledge of Deen. A computer scientist needs not hear about Newton or Shakespeare, he needs only a thin knowledge to be able to master his art. The quran at the end of Surah Kahf has an ayah that says "Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Shall We tell you the greatest losers in respect of (their) deeds? "Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life while they thought that they were acquiring good by their deeds!" This is a very interesting ayah and it is what every Muslim is required to recite if they happen to see the Dajjal. If you look at it carefully you will see how true it is seeing the attitude of the Kuffar. The notion that Humanity has just learnt how to live is a scary notion but they make you believe that as they brag about what they have achieved. I believe a conscious Muslim should take enough of the worldly knowledge to free himself/herself from the worry of sustenance. And use that time to gain knowledge of Deen and self-purification. And yes self-purification can be an end in itself. |
