Briton goes on TV 'to admit Riyadh murder'

By Matthew Beard

5 February 2001

A British man was among three Westerners arrested yesterday in connection with a car bomb that killed a British engineer in Saudi Arabia three months ago.

The men, including a Belgian and a Canadian, appeared on Saudi television to confess to the attack in Riyadh, in which the engineer, Christopher Rodway, 47, was killed and four others, including Mr Rodway's wife, were injured.

Prince Nayef, the Interior Minister, said nine other people, whose nationalities he did not reveal, had also been arrested "in connection with other crimes, and they are still under investigation".

The fatal attack on Mr Rodway was one of a series of explosions in the kingdom. They came at a time of growing anti-Western sentiment in the Arab world, stoked by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

However, Saudi police, who in December arrested an American man in connection with Mr Rodway's death, have hinted that the incidents were motivated by a personal vendetta rather than politics.

Prince Nayef said: "The source of the explosives and many other relevant facts are known to us, but in the interest of the investigation we will not disclose them now."

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office confirmed that she was aware of the broadcast but could not say whether any of the details was true. The Foreign Office was currently seeking official confirmation of the allegations, she said.

Uncertainty continued to surround the precise identities of the three accused, because their names were translated from Arabic during the televised "confessions".

The British man identified himself as Alexander Mitchall. He said that he had received instructions from an unnamed backer to bomb the car with the help of the Canadian, William Sampson.

Mr Mitchell was detained in December and was informed then that his detention was in connection with alcohol-related offences. He said he planted the explosive device on Mr Rodway's car and the two men then followed the victim and his wife to a main road, where Mr Sampson detonated the explosive by remote control.

Mr Sampson, who said he worked as a marketing consultant, claimed he was ordered by Mr Mitchell to make preparations for a second bombing with the help of a Belgian he identified as Raaf Schifter.

The second bombing was carried out on 22 November and injured three Britons and an Irish woman working for the Boeing-owned Al-Salam aircraft company in Riyadh.
