Assalamu alaikum, Hi everyone. Just decided to start this and see how far it'll go. Try providing answers to the following questions let's see what we all end up with 1. Favourite verse/quote from the Qur'an or Hadith? - The whole of Suratul Fatiha. 2. Hate that word/phrase/statement. - 'coloured people'. 3. That was some whacky movie/book! - U-Turn (so I changed it, this one's awful). 4. Cool sites you guys ought to visit. - http://www.jannah.org , http://www.wwlkad.net . 5. 'Good deed' fantasy. - Have trucks with thousands of sacks of food sent to poor people struggling to survive around the world while walking amongst them in faded clothes. 6. Eat some of my kinda food - Boiled rice with tomato stew, yam or 'eba' (made from dried cassava flakes) with okra soup all washed down with a drink called 'tsobo' (reddish in colour, non-alcoholic, taste like black currant).

Wow, Chicago people. The city where you can't separate the Hindus from the Muslims because most Pakistani/Indian sisters wouldn't be caught dead wearing hijab and having people mistake them for being Muslim first instead of the all important aspect of being Pakistani/Indian first so that they can feel such great pride and superiority for coming from one piece of land instead of another even though the whole area was cut into different pieces by a bunch of kaffirs(British). Chicago, the city where an earlier poster has to mention an Islamic school on the South Side because the wealthy Indian and Pakistanis on the North Side would not dare help the African American Muslims on the South Side to build a school or a Masjid...unless the African American happens to have come by way of Hyderabad. Sorry, I am so disappointed by what I see back in Chicago, a city that I care deeply about, especially since I grew up in Illinois and my super cute 1 year old niece lives there. People should keep Chicago in their duas. Going there makes me embarrased that my parents are from the Pakistan/India area when I see how the people have left Islam and decided to worship Pakistan and India. There are so many pagan Hindu rituals and traditions that are part of "Islam" there. Some of the things Sisters do even during weddings are just so weird. There are many great Brothers and Sisters there but that area really needs your duas. Anyway, back to the fun stuff. 1. Favourite verse/quote from the Qur'an or Hadith? Well, 33:35 is one of the coolest sounding verses. 2. Hate that word/phrase/statement. Q: Brother, where are you from?(before asking anything like how am I or if I practice Islam much. Hadith, again many but here is one: Wonderful is the case of a believer - there is good for him in everything, and this is only for the believer. If he experiences a blessing, he is grateful to Allah - which is good for him; and if he experiences an adversity, he is patient - which is also good for him. (Muslim) 2. Hate that word/phrase/statement. "When are you finishing your PhD?" :) 3. That was some whacky movie/book! Most movies are whack! Eat some of my kinda food Chicken masala, masoor daal, paratha, block of ghee (:)), ichaar (pickles), dayi (salty yougurt), all drained down by lassi (yougurt like drink). Followed by mangoes! hehe, jk :) Alhamdulillah, as long as it is halal and edible it is my kinda food. Lady fingers fried with onions optimally spiced once in a while won't be bad though :)

Assalamu alaikum, Okra? We actually call it okro over here in Nigeria and mainly use it in preparing delicious soup that draws when you dip something into it. Mm-mm!

Okra (or okro) is a different..um specie than lady finger although people often use the words loosely. Okra is small, almost square while lady fingers are long and thin :) They also taste different; okra is good for soups the type Ikani eats and lady fingers for my kind of stuff :) Actually, Ikani should know about this. In Nigeria, both types were available. I also believe this distinction is made more clearly in UK. To clear any further doubts, we actually grew lady fingers at our garden in Nigeria :) So there! :)

Assalamu alaikum, You can call 'em whatever you want, Asim. ;) They're both called by the same name in my native lingo anyhow - the important thing is how good they taste. :) Ground water melon seeds (outer seed coats removed first) make good soup too and..... hey, we're not here to talk only about food! :) :) :)

Favorite Ayah: tough one, I love 2:177 cuz it is a brief synopsis of the entire deen, but 5:48 beats it out just barely: "...If Allah had willed he would have made you one nation, but that (He) may test you in what He has given you, so compete in good deeds. The return of you is to Allah, then He will inform you about that in which you used to differ." Favorite Hadith: "How remarkable is the case of the believer! There is good for him in everything. When the believer receives any good,he is thankful to Allah, and gets a reward. And when some misfortune befalls him, he endures it patiently, for which he is also rewarded." 2. Hate that word/phrase/statement any political doublespeak...like "weapons of mass destruction".. 3. whacky movie/book too many to mention 4. Cool site to visit jannah i visited your taj mahal site cuz you made us feel so bad :)...but it didn't work for some reason http://www.learn2.com --not an Islamic site, but I think its a good one for clueless ppl like me who don't know how to do basic things... 5. 1. Favourite verse/quote from the Qur'an or Hadith? To listen to, its surah an-Najm. To recite.. too many. But i like surah al-Haaqa & surah al-Mujaadilah.. and .. and.. 2. Hate that word/phrase/statement. I've got three: a) "Are you married then brother?" b) (At the salesman job i have): "Brutherr, can you sort me out discaunt?" c) "Kash, you're going bald!" [for God's sake don't you think i know that already?!] 3. Whacky Movie/Book what does that mean? If it means good, then religious wise the best book (aside from Qur'an and related books) is "Paradise & Hell" by Sh. Umar al-Ashqar. And fiction it has to be "Vision of the Future" by Timothy Zahn. I will not attempt to describe the quality of that book! If whacky means terrible, then i think that *every* American sit-com is whacky. Man their jokes are sooo unfunny, its unbelievable. Its like, the character opens the door and everyone laughs like some super-funny event has happened?! And the same when he sits on the couch or opens the refrigerator,or anything. I think Americans need to watch some proper comedy - like "Only Fools & Horses." 4. Favorite verse from Qur'aan/quote from hadith: Quran = 4:69 Hadith = Anything authentic!  One in particular: From Saheeh Bukhari, narrated Abu Huraira:     Allah's Apostle said, "The deeds of anyone of you will not save you (from the (Hell) Fire)." They said, "Even     you (will not be saved by your deeds), O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "No, even I (will not be saved) unless     and until Allah bestows His Mercy on me. Therefore, do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately,     and worship Allah in the forenoon and in the afternoon and during a part of the night, and always adopt a     middle, moderate, regular course whereby you will reach your target (Paradise)." 2. Hated Words/Phrases cuss words, "fundamentalist", "islamic terrorists", "democracy", albright, kkk, "do you wear that at home, too?" 3. Wacky movie/book i hear that bahraini princess movie was pretty wack...other than the rest of western movies out there, most high school history text books, zionist publications/newspapers 4. Good deed fantasy hmmnn...never thought abt this before, hope we all get past it into the reality of making it happen, insha'Allah!  but here's one: opening schools for women (here and abroad) to develop skills they can use to trade/educate/etc.  establish centers for women or give them the resources to work from home...i guess the main reason for this is for the growing # of widows, single women out there. another one would be to somehow convert all of occupied palestine to islam, including that sharon and his cabinet, all the isreali military, etc...either that or confiscate all of their weaponry & wealth, and putting international sanctions on them...heck, there are already sanctions on muslim countries (Allah is the Best of Providers)...that would be beyond fantasy, into the miracle realm.  Allah is capable of all... and lastly (i could go on now that i'm on a roll), make footage of kashmir accessible to all.  unfortunately, it's against indian law to shoot/show footage of exactly what they're doing to the muslims in kashmir, one look would erase the image that all hindus are "peace loving" people.   6. My kind of food pizza and cereal (i guess i have the same taste for food as the average 6 year old).  and saunf (for you non-desi's, it's fennel seed, i prefer mine candy coated) and basboosa, too!

Of course the whole Quran is wonderful. So many Hadiths to chose from! 2.Hate that word/phrase/statement.  Go back to your country! (You brought me here)! lol. 3. slm, 'a/s/l' is common chat lingo which means 'age/sex/location'... its what people ask when they im you from out of nowhere... sometimes thats all they want to know... they dont even bother with a greeting.. its just 'asl?' gggggrrrrrrrr.... i hate it :(
