| President Putin congratulates Sharon on Israeli election win AP 8 February 2001 Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Israeli Prime Minister–elect Ariel Sharon, and said he hoped the new leader will continue efforts to make peace with the Palestinians. The telegram was the latest from international leaders urging the hawkish Sharon to continue negotiations with the Palestinians. "I wish success to the new Israeli government, which you head, and expect that it will continue efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East," Putin wrote Sharon in a telegram, according to a statement from his press service. Russia is a co–sponsor with the United States of the Middle East peace process, although it has played a mostly secondary role in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. "Russia, as a co–sponsor of the Middle East peace process, is truly interested in peace and stability in the Middle East region," Putin wrote, according to the statement.
