| Assalamu alaikum, If your MSA was to organize a bi-monthly class on campus for non-Muslims interested in Islam, in which you were to give a lecture of 30 minutes on various topics every other week, what topics would you talk about? |

| Asalaamu Alaikum ;-) Maybe talk about the science in the Qu'ran one week for those in that particular field. Origin of creation and why we are here. There are so many topics but I guess you have to consider your audience and decide what would be the most appropriate for them. |

| Assalamu Alaikum, <enter Nazia, stage right> <dimmed lights, spotlight on speaker> Good afternoon, and welcome to the first session of Islam 101. Since this is not a take-for-credit course, I will, perhaps wrongfully, assume that all of you came with the intention to find out a little more about the often misunderstood faith, Islam. If you expect me to stand up here and tell you that I can teach you all you need to know about this vast religion, you are mistaken. Nor will I tell you to throw out all previous ideas you had about Islam, no matter how skewed. Because I know this is impossible; the art of separating ourselves from our ideas, is something even the most practiced thinkers have not accomplished. Rather, what I will try to do for you is introduce a new way of thinking, a schema for thought that transcends time, place and human nature. So please put down your pencils, and open your ears, because what I am about to tell you cannot be copied on to a sheet of paper, rather it must be ingrained in your heart. <touch heart now> <back to reality> Ok, so I'm a drama queen. But I think its effective. The way we approach college students about the issue of Islam is through wisdom and beautiful words, as the Quran tells us. So we first must get them in the mood to listen to us, and we do that with a dramatic intro. If I were in charge of teaching this class, the first thing I would do is get someone more knowledgeable than me :) But if no one agreed and made me do it, I would introduce the IDEA of Islam, before any of its tenants. I would talk about the sheer wisdom of its basis. Its not based on some freaky, ever-changing western mentality that has brainwashed us all. It's based on intellect, reason, logic, practicality. I would use rhetorical questioning to get them to admit the importance of having rules for society, and not just the individual. Then, BOOM, I'd hit them with the notion of a Creator and build from there. After I got them thinking a little, I would hit them with the notion of the Quran. Once we got there, it would be easy, because I could simply cover the reflective issues of Islam that are mentioned in the Quran. Ok, I know, it sounds all theoretical and unpalpable, but it can be done, not saying I can do it...but it can be done :) Oh, I would also be mad shady about everything I did. Like, I wouldn't say, "Today we're going to talk about Science in the Quran" Rather, I would start by questioning them on the stages of embryology and get them to first admit that it was impossible to have known all that was revealed in the Quran at the time it was written. Theeen, I would tell them what the Quran says and wow them :) See, if I had straight up mentioned "science and the Quran" they would have put up their blinders and locked up their hearts, because their old notions would have settled in. Buut, if I never call upon them to even recognize their old notions...they won't know what hit them when I mention all the stuff in the Quran. Thats it for now, take care, Wassalam, Nazia |

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh, Nazia cool post :) Yeah, I think it's a good idea to ask the participants what specifically they'd like to study and then implementing that in the curriculum... that way they'll feel like they've actually contributed, that it's *their* class, and I think they'll be more inclined to come back the next week... I dunno, that's the best I could come up with :) wasalaam. :) |

| Assalamu Alaikum, I agree with se7en. You should ask them what they want to learn about and then provide them with that information. You can also start with the basics. The Pillars of Islam and Iman. Talk about Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him), the Qur'an and the importance of it to us, things of that sort. Hope I was able to help. Salam, |
