Hadith - Bukhari 8:840, Narrated Abu Huraira (RA)   The Prophet (SAW)  said: "Avoid the seven great destructive sins."  They (the people) asked, "O Allah's Messenger!  What are they?"  He said,

1."To join partners in worship with Allah,
2.to practise sorcery;
3.to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause (according to Islamic law);
4.to eat up Riba' (usury);
5.to eat up the property of an orphan;
6.to show one's back to the enemy and fleeing from the battle-field at the time of fighting and
7.to accuse chaste women who never even think of anything touching their chastity and are good believers."

 Insha'Allah may Allah guide us all and hep us to what is right! Ameen!!

Sincerly,
Jenna

Assalamu alaikum,

Just to clarify, these are not the *only* Great Sins (aka Major Sins).  There are several other ahadith that mention other major sins, but this one mentions the most at one place (seven).

May Allah protect us from falling into them.  Remember that there are many acts of worship which erase all the sins that are committed between them (ex. fasting in Ramadan erases the sins from the previous Ramadan, jumu'ah to jumu'ah, arafaat to arafaat, etc).  But they all put a condition that no major sins must have been committed in that period of time.

Wallahul musta'aan.

So is there expiation for major sins? I was under the impression the only sin that could not be forgiven was shirk?

Wassalam

All sins can be forgiven including shirk with the proper repentance. If you die on shirk however it is not forgiveable.

to add to what jannah said ...

of course the "proper repentance" for shirk would be ... the acceptance of Tawhid and Islam.  If someone does that, his shirk is forgiven!

He starts with a clean slate.

Wassalamu alaikum.
P.S. Some major sins require more than repentance.  For example, you may have to pay a certain amount of charity for some, or fast for a certain number of days, etc.
