This is from a sister friend of mine...I think it's a great idea and the more sisters that support it the better... Assalaamu Alaikum I was on the train making the long commute home, reading a piece that was included in the editorial packet for earlier this week. The editorial packet is a collection of articles and proposals being worked on for future issues. You are supposed to read them before the meetings so that you can join in the discussion. Nevertheless, I was reading the article on a Thursday and had been reading it for two days previously. It is a sizable article, but that's not the reason for the slow read. Reading it was like being absorbed into a madness that exhausted and made me want to scream. It was about how the sanctions are effecting the pple of Iraq. It was written by a Muslim, Canadian, female journalist of Lebanese descent. Unfortunately, this version is not going to make into the magazine for perfectly good reasons that if i were to tell, will just make the wait to get to the punch even longer. However, the article sparked something in me. The article was written in first person narrative of this journalist's journey into Iraq and the women she talked with who helped define a situation that is so incrediblely dire. It was something we have all heard in the news, but hearing it from her and from those women made it more real to me. For obvious readings I can not share it with you guys. Now, I am hoping that most of you made it past that 'brief introduction' to what the real purpose of this email is. I have this idea and I know a couple of you have heard a previous version of it before and laughed it off as a joke, which is fine because thinking back on it, it was laughable what I said back them. But this is different, so read me out. I have an idea for a magazine. A magazine comprised of first person narratives by women, Muslim women from different paths of life, politics and understanding. Women, who's experiences are the shadows behind what goes on and goes down in this world. Stories, drenched in truth telling us what really does happen in places like Palestine, Iraq, Canada or Minnesota. These stories are real accounts, mixtures of facts and opinions, but of reality that most of us won't ever know, but should. I realized something from reading the aforementioned article, that women are a force in this world; they hold together the seams and the stitches that war, destitution and arrogance tear apart. As women, life flows through us. Not just physically, but spiritually and intellectually. Ours stories should be told and we should be to the one to tell them. Lo and behold! she even has a name for this fantasy. I think we should call it "Harem". Harems are a place where women gather and this magazine should be a place where the stories women tell come together for those who want a glimpse into lives that tell hardships and triumphs. I think the title is befitting. Now, the stories should come from all over. Most of you are innate writers. What we also need are editors or even ghost-writers to give the stories shape. We would need people who know people and those who know computers and design. The prototype does not have to be far reaching, maybe just our stories. Unlike all my past fantasies, I know something like this will take a while to come into fruition. But it will be fun and it will be something we can all be so proud off. Now most of you who know me are thinking, here we go again another larger-then-life idea that give or take a week will be yet another punchline. I don't think so. Even if this is something that you do not think is for you, but if you know someone who would be interested, please pass this email on to her. This is how serious I am, that I am willing to go beyond me safe circle of friends. I believe that there is something worthy in this idea. Take some time to think about, I will only be checking my email every five minutes. |
