Assalamu'alaikum,

Report: Israelis are using nerve gas against Palestinians

Occupied Jerusalem: 15 February, 2001 - The Palestinian Authority has
called on the international community to help ascertain the type of
nerve
gas which Israeli Occupation troops have been using against Palestinian
protesters particularly in the Gaza Strip.

The PA minister of health, Riadh al Za'anoun, said on Thursday the
Palestinians were not able to establish the exact type of the Gas used
and
consequently couldn't administer the proper antidote on affected
people.

"We have established that the gas used against our people by the
Israeli
occupation army is not the standard tear gas used around the world to
disperse demonstrators, it is a nerve agent, maybe phosgene or anther
variety of nerve gas."

Al Za'anoun said the gas was certainly fatal when used in enclosed
areas,
and caused a variety of symptoms not caused by normal tear gas.

"It causes acute shortness of breath, disorientation, hallucination,
fainting, vomiting with stains of blood, and nervous breakdown."

According to Awni al Khatib, Prof. of Chemistry at the Hebron
University,
the gas used by the Israeli army is  known chemically  as "phosgene"
(COCl-2) which he said was a serious nerve agent which can be very
deadly.

"This gas was used during World War I and proved very deadly," said al
Khatib in an interview on Thursday.

He added that it was highly possible that this gas will have long
lasting
effects on affected people and might cause cancer or infertility.

The Israeli army denied that it was using nerve gas against
Palestinians,
calling Palestinian complaints to that effects "highly exaggerated."

However, an Israeli army spokesman recognized on Wednesday that the
type of
gas used against Palestinians in Gaza "would never be used against
Jewish
demonstrators."

When asked why, the Israeli spokesman said "no comment''.
zakir.
