i don't really see it that way, but i think i understand what you are saying.  maybe not? ???

i like to use the analogy of a person driving a car on the road.  there are rules and regulations put into place for the protection and safety of yourself and others.  green light go, red light stop, yellow light (in between the halal and haraam, so avoid it  ;)  ).

Assalamu alaikum,
Yes, but most importantly, Islam encourages muslims to do good. :)

I guess I could agree to what you are saying if I make a medical analogy.  Islam stresses on preventing diseases, not finding cures for them.

Although cures are also there.  But the stress is always on prevention (qat'ul asbaab - as Kashif said in another thread).

Wassalamu alaikum.

I don't agree with the commet at all for two reasons:

1) With all the negative stereotyping against Islam & muslims already, to label Islam as a "preventive" religion would be equivalent to shooting yourself in the foot. People these days aren't interested in stuff that is inhibitive - as i'm sure we all know.

2) If you look at the rulings within Islam, you'll find that Allah has prohibited very few things compared to those which He has left halal. For example, with regard to beverage. We are prohibited to drink alcohol. Yet at the same time, permissible for us is water, milk, fruit juices, carbonated drinks, and all else.

Another example, marriage. The people who are ineligible for marriage are very few in comparison to those we are allowed to marry: "Prohibited to you are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your aunts..." [Qur'an 4:23], and after completing the prohibited categories... "Except for these, ALL others are lawful, provided you seek them in marriage with a dowry and not for fornication." [Qur'an 4:24]

If anything, Islam should be portrayed in a positive light, because everything within it is good & a guiding light from Allah azza wa jall.
