Salaam 'Alaikum

The only thing that refers to the circumcision of women directly is a hadith which says:  When you circumcise then do not cut severely, since that is better for her and more pleasing to the husband (spoken to a midwife Umm Atiyah, and collected by Abu Dawud and Bayhaqi).

This is used as evidence that while the circumcision (khafd) of girls is permissible, that what is known as "infibulation" is not permissible, since it is severe and injures the female for life and causes her unbearable pain.

It is my understanding that none of the Mothers of the Believers were themselves circumcised, nor were the daughters of the Prophet, sallalahu aleyhi wa salaam.  For me, this is an important distinction, as it would show that while the circumcision is *permissible,* the Sunnah would be not to have it done.

Other than that, I think that general ayat and ahadith about kindness, mercy, and gentleness with women and girls are relevant when it comes to the issue of Islam's view of Female Genital Mutilation.

Bismilah arRahman arRahiem

Salaam alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu,

My college professor who is from Egypt told me that the reason behind this hadith is that when Islam was spreading to regions where female circumcision was tradition, the ruling of not cutting severely was announced, so that the people would be more willing to become muslims since they could keep their tradition but not so as where the women would mutilated.
To be clear, my professor doesn't teach Islam, and i was wondering if anybody knew more about this?

Ma3a Salama,
Nurain.
