Weirdness

So there I was happily browsing through the posts in the Madina, with my AOL Instant Messenger online, when I suddenly got a message on my screen:

"xyz wants to send you an Instant Message - Accept?  Decline?"

The name is unfamiliar.  I press Accept.

xyz: hello
Arsalan: hello
xyz: who are you?
Arsalan: shouldn't I be asking you this question?
xyz: are you muslim?
Arsalan: yes.
xyz: I am also muslim.
Arsalan: Assalamu alaikum.
xyz: wallakum assalamu.
Arsalan: how did you find my nickname?

Silence!

xyz: I am 12 years old.  Do you know xyz?
Arsalan (thinking that xyz is perhaps some famous character I don't know about): No.  Who is xyz?

Silence!

xyz: I'm waiting for my cousin to get on!  xyz is my sister.
Arsalan: But how did you find out my nickname?
xyz: I'm only 12 years old.  I don't understand what you are saying.
Arsalan: Where are you from?

Disconnect!

???

...creepy.  Something sord of similar happened to me on AOL too except this person knew I was Muslim and knew who I was but wouldn't tell me who he was.  It was frustrating because there's no way to figure out who they are from just their screen names unless they have a profile on AOL, which this guy didn't.  aaah well...

Salamu Aliakom,

sounds like a prank AOL message. Get their IP address and track em down :)

Br. Yusuf, How do I get someone's IP address from AOL?

AOL ppl always think they are anonymous and invincible. They are not.

Their IP is always tracked just like everyone else's who log onto anything on the internet. You log onto aol, they know who you are and where you go. If someone harasses you from AOL save their IP, log everything and send it to abuse@aol.com

I don't think we should be helpless victims, especially not in a technology that can prevent it. I've seen many sisters be intimidated and upset because of some freak . It's too easy sometimes to pretend to ignore it. But believe me, if it happens to you he's done it before and will do it again.

Here's some things to do if you're harassed online:

1. Save all emails, logs, ips, conversations on chat, everything.

2. Send above to moderators, ops, isp administrators, the ppl in charge of taking care of abuse.

3. NEVER respond to anything, don't reply even to tell him to leave you alone. What he wants is a response. Most software/email programs will let you block addresses, nicks, buddies or emails.

4. Ask a computer geek friend to help you find out about the person and/or the best way of blocking getting rid of him.

5. Avoid posting things with your full name, address, pictures, personal info. Just b/c someone says they're muslim, doesn't mean they're not a creep.

6. Go to said computer geek friends and get them to hack into their account, gather all credit card information and proceed to crash their harddrive.

If you have any questions or need some proof of the above let me know...I don't understand why creeps feel it is ok to harass people over the internet. Many of these abusers wouldn't dare do anything like this in real life. I guess it proves what cowards they are...losers. Also about ppl who think that what you do --abusing, macking in irc, in email, in im whatever on the internet doesn't count, as if the kiramun katibeen can't read computer screens eh. well to take from the quran words khaasireen in this world, and the hereafter.
