Hajj
Maybe a piece on the beauty of the Quran
Maybe something on one of the 5 pillars
Mosques around the US/World (people always like purty pictures)

And my personal favorite:
Brothers who think they are all that in b-ball

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

Somethin on youth is always good.. but don't have the same six lame articles on Muslim youth in America, get some actual youth to write about their experiences.

Tazkiya, purification of the soul..

state of the ummah today... with news on palestine etc

muslims and the media, have stuff on CAIR, effects Muslims have on the media, effects the media has on Muslims..

Marriage is always an interesting topic.. ;)

History of Islam in America.. have some articles on Native American Muslims, NOI, Malcolm X the 60's black Muslim movement, immigrant Muslims, converts..

Something that I think would be cool is something like "the typical American Muslim family" right... and then you can talk about youth in America, the divorce rate among Muslims in America, how to find a spouse here, raising children here (especially second generation American muslims), tradition/culture vs islam, good careers/schools for Muslims to look into, the future (what are our kids gonna be like) etc etc

just some random suggestions :)

Asssalm ualykum,

Maybe the editors should hold meeting with everyone who contributes to the magazine for their ideas? something to think about.

I think cover ideas should be a mixture of things. Sometimes it can be a traditional Islamic topic, other times it can be an Islamic commentary on something in the news, and other times it can be Islamic advice on a problem facing the community, e.g. drugs, alcohol, gf/bf.

Don't keep your content static, but make it dynamic, and make it relevant to the readers.

Salamu Aliakom,

well why not take one of the topics from the webboard :)

Like "TV or not TV", i mean yeah it is controversial but the article can be written to "inform" and not to "persuade". Other good topics would be on some Muslim history. Maybe start off with the Seerah, and then edge your way to other history.

Also be sure to get some "good" writers, and I mean good writers. People reading the magazine are going to Insha Allah appreciate good writing skills.

I agree with Kashif.

Also, since Sheikh Waleed is in your community I think it would be good idea if you guys did an Ask the Imam column and get him to answer questions/concerns people have (since he already does that anyways).  And I'm still waiting for you guys to come out with that online version. :)

Princess, you can use whatever is on there. Most of the material isn't authored by us. Its a collection of good articles from the net & mailing lists and some short extracts from books, but we are now starting to author or edit articles ourselves to address different situations.

Jannah, we use Adobe InDesign to create it and from there you can export to PDF format. Alhumdulillah, the brother who does the layout is really good with typography. Currently it reaches about 5000+ Muslims, alhumdulillah.

I haven't heard of Adobe InDesign, I guess I'll have to look into that.  I do know that they make a writeable version of Adobe Acrobat (meaning you can make your own PDF files), but don't know how easy that is to use.

5,000 Muslims?  That's really good to hear.

I have to take my hat off to Adobe: InDesign is a really good package masha'allah. The number of things you can do in it to give your work the professional professional look is amazing.

But it costs alot too!
