"Stupid?"

Salaam 'Alaikum

As some of you know, I am the webmistress of Cyber Muslima.  Every year, for the past three years, I write an essay or article about Afghanistan, in "honor" of women's history month and international women's day, which is March 8.  This is not to say that I celebrate such things myself, but the first year, it just came about in response to an International Women's Day gathering by feminist celebrities for Afghanistan, and I've kept this personal trad'n every year since.

SOOOO, anyway, it's about that time of year for me to write another article.  Here's my question.  Every year, my focus has been media perceptions and misconceptions about Afghanistan, especially perceptions regarding the women of Afghanistan.  My goal has always been to get people to look beyond the sensationalist headlines and exotic images and look at the real Afghanistan: the 10 million landmines, the 20 yrs of war, the starvation, the droughts, the disease, and so on.  I have never explicitly condemned the Taliban, nor have I have explicitly or implicitly supported them (I myself am neutral).  In fact, I deliberately try to talk around the Taliban.

And every year, without fail, I receive angry e-mails from (mainly) very liberal Muslima types (the types who reject hadith or reject hijab), or feminist types accusing me of supporting the Taliban.  I've long since stopped replying to these e-mails, but ... sometimes I feel like... aren't you READING the gosh darned article, or do you just see "Afghanistan," and no diatribe condeming the Taliban and *assume* that I'm  not a hater?  I even wrote an extra article last year about WHY I write about Afghanistan and what I think that we here in the West can do.  No reply to that one.

This year, I feel like titling my article, "It's About the Landmines, Stupid!"

Would that be bad adab?

wa alaikum assalaam,
well ukhti, since you said you've written articles on the topic periodically and have repeatedly addressed the issue at hand..and for some reason, ppl can't seem to think past that misconception or the good changes that the Taliban has brought to the unruly chaotic dangerous situation in Afghanistan where there is now some sort of order and organization..and a rebuilding of the country and it's infrastructure...i say, go with the title..esp if you add quotation marks to it..it'll just emphasize a point..

it'll just be like that LA professor Dr. Rudi Mattoni when during the delhi sand fly issue and the complete brouhaha that went around b/c ppl assumed that the building of a shopping complex in LA was put on pause just b/c of a "fly" (which is rather unique and beautiful subhan'allah..and acts similar to a hummingbird..), to get the focus back on track and to explain that it's much more than "just the fly"...that if you destroyed the habitat by getting rid of the sand dunes you not only get rid of the fly ("just the fly" - delhi sand fly) but also other species living in the habitat...he wrote an article to the newspaper titling it, "It's the habitat, stupid!"

so as long as it's in quotations and you're driving a point across for emphasis..i don't think it's rude.. :) no breaking adab there? ;) ??

wa salaams,
Pacific Breeze
