just receive this joke, hope that brothers will enjoy more :)

A lion was getting married, and a mouse at the ceremony was so
thrilled that he jumped up and down with joy. When one of his friends
asked why he was so happy, he replied that his brother was getting
married.

"What brother ?" his friend asked in astonishment.
"The lion is my brother," replied the mouse.
"But how can he be your brother, he is a lion and you are a mouse ?"
said his friend.
The mouse said with a grin,
" We were all lions before we got married."

salaams,
hmmm...i don't know why it'd make sense to "desis"? i think it's a typical statement..? unless if i'm misunderstanding a cultural connection lol

from what i understand of it:
lion before marriage, mouse afterwards:
so many things could contribute to this.
in the beg, eager, in charge, vain :p, etc, etc..afterwards, humbled down, wife's got the $$$, wife gives HIM the orders etc etc..

comprehendo? ;)

Maybe Arsalan means its a popular Urdu joke? ???  I tried translating it in Urdu and here's what I came up with:

Aik shehar shadhi karnah lugathay, aur aik chuha oohs juga pay tha. Yeah chuha itna khush tha kay yeah ooper neecha jump kiya.  Pir aik dost poochatha kay woh itna khoosh kiyoon tha.  Usnay boltha kay iska bhai shadhi kurnay lugaythay.

"Kaunsa bhai?" iska dost poochatha.
"Woh shehar mera bhai hai", bola yeah chuha.
"Lekin yeah tumara bhai kaisa hai, yeah shehar hai aur tum chuha hai", dost nay bola.
Khushi say, yeah chuha bola, "Hum sub shehar hain, shahdi say pehlay"

Does that make any sense? ???

LOL Bhaloo!  Nice try :)

I guess I was mistaken.  I said this joke wouldn't make much sense to the non desis.  I should have said that this joke won't make much sense to the non Urdu-speaking people :)

The reason is because the word "mouse" (chooha) has a connotation in Urdu which is non-existent in English.

Here's my translation:

Ek shayr ki shaadi ho rahee thee, aur ek chooha us kee shaadi per itna khush tha kay khushi kay maaray ooper neechay uchal raha thaa.  Us kay aik dost nay us say poocha kay aakhir woh is shaadi per itna khush kyoon hai to us nay jawaab diyaa kay yeh us kay bhai ki shaadi hai.

"Kon sa bhai?"  Us kay dost nay hairaan ho kay poocha.
"Woh shayr mera bhai hai," choohay nay jawaab diya.
"Lekin woh tumhara bhai kaisay ho sakta hai?  Woh to shayr hai, aur tum choohay ho?"  Us kay dost nay hairaan ho kar poocha.
Choohay nay muskuraatay huay jawab diyaa,
"Hum sub shadi say pehlay shayr he hotay hain."

:D  Great one Anwar!

Wassalamu alaikum.

[/quote]Good question :)  Yes, there is.  A more appropriate translation would be,

"us nay shokh bharay andaaz main jawab diya."

That's sheen, waao, khaa.  But it's pronounced shokh, not shookh.

Let's not make this into a Urdu tutoring forum :)

Who came up with these rules? ???  I don't think it will be fair to the non-Urdu speakers to see us post in Urdu in every other thread and confuse people.  Sure it'll be entertaining for Urdu speakers like Arsalan, Asim, Zakk, Jannah, Uzher, Saleema, etc, but the others will miss out.

Here's what I suggest.  Let's find an extremely long post (perhaps one by Abu Khaled, or a poem/story by Se7en) and let's translate that into Urdu, and IM our answer to the judge, who will then post up the results for judging.

That way it will save people from having to read poor Urdu translations, more then once. :)

DOH! :o waaaaiiiiittt a sec.... if you mean you want me to read and judge the urdu stuff for correctness, then umm... errr... you should probably know that my urdu sucks :( (if you didnt know already ;-D )

but if you mean all i have to do is just post em up, then yeah sura i can do that... but wouldnt it just be easier for the contestant to post it themself? or am i just not paying attention to what im reading here and completely miss the point? ??? *sigh*... its been a long day folks... i wish it were friday :( ... imma crawl back under my desk now and assume fetal position.

Well the reason that we shouldn't post them up is that some people might cheat and look at the other person's answer (in a moment of weakness).  So that way if we send it to someone and he/she posts it, then its all good.  No Meraj, don't worry, you won't have to judge it, unless you want to. :D

Assalam-u-Alaikum,

The Prophet  (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “There should not be
any prizes except for archery, camel-racing or horse-racing.”
(Reported by Abu Dawood, no 2574; al-Tirmidhi, no. 1700; al-Nisaa’i, no
3586, 3587; Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 7498). An exception is made for
these three activities because they help in jihaad for the sake of
      Allaah.  (Islamq-a.com).

So Insha-Allah there won't be any prizes!

Wassalam-u-Alaikum

Re: joke
Arsalan

[slm]

Uzer, I think you cut out only part of the answer, and I'm afraid it may be misunderstood that way.

Here's the complete question and answer (from www.islam-qa.com):

Question:

What is your opinion on holding soccer tournaments where each team pays a sum of money as a subscription, and this money is spent on buying prizes which will be given to the winners and referees?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

What we think is that there are some reservations about giving prizes for games. These games are permissible so long as there is nothing haraam involved in them, such as uncovering ‘awraat, distracting people from their salaah, or players swearing at one another, all of which is haraam. If there is nothing haraam involved, then they are permissible and there is nothing wrong with them. But this taking contributions from all participants and giving it to the winner is not permissible, because the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “There should not be any prizes except for archery, camel-racing or horse-racing.” (Reported by Abu Dawood, no 2574; al-Tirmidhi, no. 1700; al-Nisaa’i, no 3586, 3587; Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 7498). An exception is made for these three activities because they help in jihaad for the sake of Allaah.

Taking prizes in any other kind of contest is haraam, but some scholars such as Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said that there is nothing wrong with betting in matters of shar’i knowledge, because shar’i knowledge is a kind of jihaad for the sake of Allaah. Jihaad for the sake of Allaah includes jihaad with weapons and jihaad with knowledge. But we think that what is mentioned in the question is not permissible. And Allaah knows best.

-----------------------------------

Please note that this is only talking about "games."  This does not include things like Qur'an recitation competitions, Qur'anic word-a-day contests :) (i.e. anything educational).  This is evident for the following query at the same website:

Question:

What is the hukm concerning the holding of Quraan reading competitions for children, to encourage them further, with the giving of prizes?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

Holding such competitions is something good, if the aim is to encourage children to memorize the Book of Allaah from an early age. There is nothing wrong with encouraging them by offering prizes and gifts, and you will have a reward from Allaah. This has to do with cooperating in righteousness and piety, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“… Help you one another in Al-Birr and Al-taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety)…” [al-Maa;idah 5:2]

And Allaah knows best.

Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.
