Asalamu Alaykum WRWB,

I am new to the board and it was suggested I offer an introduction of myself, insha Allah. I'll try to br brief. I was raised Catholic, became dissillusioned early on (perhaps for all the wrong reasons), lived a life of indulgence, materialism and decadence until I was about 35 and realised for all the "fun" and "pleasure" I was experiencing, in truth, I was in Hell. Still having doubts about God, i turned to Buddhism, a very peaceful, selfless deen. I was a member of a Tibetan tradition, but wound up spending more time involved in elaborate rituals praying to "buddhas" who were mythical at best. Became discouraged and became religion-less again. Last October I saw a TV interview with Yusuf Islam, and it was like, SLAM--that's the answer! Pronounced my Shahada in October of last year (what a wonderful experience THAT was!!!) and have been struggling along the Way ever since. But Allah ta'ala has been steadily answering my prayers, leading me in the right direction when I get turned around or lost.  I still carry a lot of "non-Islamic baggage", but for now, I do the best I can do and pray to Allah ta'ala every day to grant me the conditions to live the true Muslim life, Insha Allah.

So that is where I am at the ripe old age of 41.

As long as I am rambling--anyone suggest a good way to learn Arabic for the dual purposes of reading/understanding the Quran and to also converse?

Wassalam,

Brother Daud

Wa' Aleikoum salaam brother

Welcome to the board/city.  Insha' Allah you will benefit from the immense generosity of the brothers and sisters who visit this board and us from you.

As for the Arabic querey, my suggestion is to try your local masjid.  Some imams or other brothers will offer classes.

By the way, whereabouts are you based?  US?  UK?

Wow, welcome first and foremost to Islam, and secondly to this board :) I wonder how many other people that Yusuf Islam VH1 special helped guide to Islam?!
Subhan'Allah.

Take Care,

Wa'alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

Welcome to the board Brother Daud.  It's an honor for us to have you on the board.  It's always a special feeling to be acquainted with someone who accepted Islam by their own will, and after their own search for the Truth.  It gives us solace, increases our Faith, and gives us hope for the future of this Ummah (nation) of ours.

How to learn Arabic?  There are several ways.  Check any Islamic bookstore (there are a few on the web: http://www.astrolabe.com , http://www.soundvision.com ).  There are several books that teach the Arabic language as well as some great computer software.  Hope this helps.

Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.

assalaamu alaikum!
masha'allah, congrats! :)

as to arabic, i suggest try your local universities? i can also suggest some good books. however, at what level are you at currently? can you read the arabic letters yet? check out your local muslim community as well as they usually offer arabic classes...if not, for the advanced, then definitely for the beginner! :)

ahlan wa sahlan!

if you'd like to start directly from the Quran while learning new surahs..then there's one particular book in mind. the most important thing is to build up your vocabulary..and for now, stay away from amiyah, which is the colloquial arabic...there are several different dialects and they will confuse you considerably not to mention your fusha (pure/quranic) arabic will be corrupted...at least in the beginning..

let me know..if i can help insha'allah. :)

wa salaamu alaikum,
your sis in islam. :)

Salaam 'Alaikum

Daud:

If you are in New Haven, or don't mind a drive down there, there is an Islamic Center there which is Mash'Allah, really together, and this summer (I believe), their founder, Imam Zaid Shakir will be returning to the city from several years of study overseas in Syria.   If Imam Zaid's in the house, then you know it's going to have good educational programs and what not, insha'Allah.

Jazakullah y'all.  I will check out the arebesq website. New Haven is kind of a schlep (oops that Yiddish, now I'm in trouble) for me, but the masjid I go to is wonderful, the brothers are great and the Imam, who is from Africa is showing me how strong his sabr is as he is trying very hard to teach me Tajweed. It is so wonderful to watch him with the little ones!

Wassalam!

slm,

br daud... i was reading your 'journey to islam' on islamonline.net, and you had said that the person who changed it all for you was br. khalid yaseen... mashallah, that man is awesome! in fact, he lives here in alabama, (selma to be exact, about 2 hours from birmingham). last year our club at school invited him over to give a lecture at our school. i have heard that he has been known to give speeches where at the end, non-muslims in the audience want to take shahaada right away... subhanallah... man we need more people like him in the world... inshallah, may allah reward him for his efforts.

ma'salaam :)

Meraj, I know, that brother is outstanding. The talk I heard of his (mp3 on the net) was just like that, at the end all these brothers pronounced shahada, it was amazing. If anyone wants the url for his talk I would be happy to provide it, it would be great tool for Da'wah insha Allah.

My only "problem" with his approach has to do with the other side of this coin of da'wah, and that is getting people to pronounce the shahada before they REALLY know what is going to be expected of them. As I pointed out in some earlier posts, it was definitely NOT explained to me before I became a Muslim all that was going to be expected of me. We all have to learn to be more up-front when drawing people to Islam, we have to let them know ultimately what is going to be asked of them--beards, hijab, dogs, pictures, food--the whole 9.

Wassalam y'all.

Check out these two lectures. They are, literally, what put me "over the top" and convinced me to pronounce my shahada...
