What do you think?

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

I've been asked to read some poetry at my school talent show.  Usually the program's mostly raps, skits, slams, things like that, all by students.  I've never been to the talent show before, and from what I hear it has a concert feel to it.

But things are supposed to be different this year.  Poetry is a new thing this year.  And I have this opportunity to tell 200 youth something, anything.  It's an amazing opportunity for daawah.  But it reminds me a little too much of the Muslim who hits the bar/club scene, claiming his purpose is daawah...

What do you think?

i see what you mean, about the 'club dawah', but how exactly does it relate to your situation?

i agree... its a good dawah opportunity... i say go for it :)

cuz i'll be going into a potentially shady environment to do daawah... and you gotta have both ikhlaas in intention *and* the proper approach for an action to be accepted..

I spoke with the head coordinator lady person (whatever her title was :)) and I explained some things to her.  The rest of the 'talent' have to audition to get in the show, and she said she'd let me know if the majority are going to be raps/songs etc.. but she assured me that this year would be 'different' from the years past, and will not just be focused on 'rap and the thug lifestyle' haha..

so we'll see :)

i say....what HE (al basha) says..is ...what...I say!!! :P
go for it...
not necess an "islamic" poem..but one that reflects upon the probs of today..of corruption..of finding God..or being spiritual..of struggles faced in life...etc...stuff that can hint to islam etc...since...others might not appreciate you using it as a stage for promoting islam, religon etc..

unless..if u title it or give it a personal reflective take to it..on how islam affects you..or it's impact on u or ur interpretation/reflection on islam etc..you know..make it personal..

let us know how it goes and share the poem! :)

Hey se7en :)
I think you should do it. I have read some of your work and I think that Allah blessed with this talent for a reason (what reasons? I dont know) but this would definitely be a good way to give daawah like you said.  Trust me you will definitely get a reaction (and the majority of the time its a positive reaction); I've done it in my school many times; and people love it.
Hey let me know when its going to be, I'll be there for support (inshallah). :)

I think it's great that you (as a muthajaba)have been asked to take part in this talent show. Although, (hesitant to go against the grain here), I wouldn't do it if it were me.  And that's because there is so much doubt there.  I mean, we know that we are not supposed to put ourselves in any type of unIslamic environment.  That is just obedience to Allah.  If there is going to be music, raps, dancing, etc. with unIslamic themes, then this environment is not suitable for Muslims.  In my years in highschool, I never saw a talent show that was truly appropriate for Muslim eyes & ears.  It would be hard to believe that any highschool talent show in the U.S. would be even if there were revisions & turns from year to year. Our absolute priority is obedience to Allah and we never disobey Him to give dawaa, regardless of how many people you could reach.  Also, you mentioned that the coordinator assured you that it would be "different" this year.  Well, how assured can you truly be that this event will be o.k. for you to attend and participate in when the event is coordinated, organized, and put on by those with a totally different set of views and values than us?  The standards are completely different.

May Allah guide you to the right decision.
strut that talent...

Hey "Se7en" I didn't know you were thinking about doing a talent
show thingi, how'd i miss that? maybe you told me and somewhere in between
an exam and a paper i forgot...I think you should go for it...there
won't be music or dancing while you're doing your dawah so I don't really
see it as a problem, and your stuff is really good MashaAllah...plus
just being a muhajabba can be a phat da'wa opp too...let us know!
oh yeah and before you and the other madina administrator who's my peep
get all heated i'll try to stop being lazy and anonymous and will
actually register soon InshaAllah :)

Assalamu Alaikum,

I think reading poetry at the Talent Show is a great idea. Don't worry se7en you'll never bend away from your purpose!!
It depends on the type of poetry that you'll read. Is the poem going to be your original work or another famous poets? If it is your poem or if you can choose whose poem you want to read, choose an Islamic poem so that you'll get a message to the 200 students.
Good luck and have fun.

I read "somewhere" that two things that the Prophet pbuh  hated were poets and mad men. Can anyone enlighten me?

Assalam ualykum,

Kathy, yes, I have heard that too. I have also heard that he distinguished good poetry from bad poetry. When Rasullulah conquered Makkah a man came to him and recited some verses praising the muhajireen, and so the ansar were dissapointed that he did not say anything about them, (or was it Rasullulah's wish that he should recite something nice about them??), and so the poet heard about it and he then recited some verses praising the virtues of the Ansar.

The man who recited the poetry was the same person who had written some bad poetry demeaning the Muslims and the Prophet (S) and the sahaba wanted to kill him when he came to the Prophet (S) to seek forgiveness but the Prophet (S) forgave him.

Many people accused the Prophet (S) of being a poet and so perhaps he said that he didn't like poets in that context maybey, but God knows best.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,

Here's an update for you guys:

I ended up not going to the talent show because *all* the other performers were rappers.  And from what I've been told about the show, it's a good thing I wasn't there :)

What's cool is that at meccah, the muslim group we started in our highschool, we organized a Poetry I-slam (get it? poetry slam.. but if you add an 'i' to 'slam' you get 'Islam'.  cool huh? thought of that one myself ;))

That went really really really well alhamdulillah :)  We had short stories, poems, rhymes, all with a Muslim flavor.  Some non-Muslims came too.. it was awesome.

This guy from a local writers guild showed up.  He was this old white dude with glasses, in chinos and a kurta top - the stereotypical writer, eccentric, a little off his rocker :) When the Qur'an recitation and translation were being read he was mad focused.. shut his eyes tight, went completely still.. we thought he was about to start meditating.. heheh

And one brother, who's usually pretty crazy, got up there are read this poem/rhyme he had written about heaven and hell and how he's lived his life in sin.. and now all he's waitin for is the day of judgement when he'll burn forever...

What he wrote was amazingly beautiful, but what it said was wrong.  I hear people say that all the time, it doesn't matter what I do because I'm goin to hell anyway, it's too late for me, etc.  That's not true at all.  No matter how much wrong you've committed in your life, you have to keep struggling, you gotta keep working on yourself, and Allah will reward you and forgive you if you're sincere in that..

the whole meeting was just beautiful... when I got home I had this goofy smile on my face... it just went really well, I'm really happy :)

About poetry... there's a hadeeth narrated by Tirmidhi which says something along those lines, that there is good poetry and bad poetry, and you should take benefit from the good and leave the rest... I had it on my homepage at one time, I don't remember where I got it from.  I'll look for it inshaAllah.

take care y'all  :)

wasalaamu alaykum :)

Way to go se7en!  I'm curious ... which translation of the Qur'an did you use?

Also, how exactly is a poetry slam (or a poetry I-slam) done?  You just set up a table and start reading stuff out loud to passers-by in the hallway?  I've never seen a poetry slam before.

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

We read from Yusuf Ali, just a few ayahs of surah Rum. ("And among His signs is this.." )

A real poetry slam is when you come up with poetry right then and there, and you go back and forth with someone in a kinda lyrical duel.  That sounds really weird but when you actually hear it it's pretty hot.

We didn't do that though, because none of us are that skilled :)  We just had people come up and read poetry that they liked/wrote.

In the hallway?  No man, it was in a classroom.  We had flyers up around school for it.

Ooooh I get it!  A poetry slam is called "bait baazi" in Urdu :)  I've seen it happen before, but not in English.  It's hard!!!  I used to do this with my friends, but with poetry that we had memorized (from Iqbal, Ghalib, songs(!), etc), not our own.  It's fun!

Do people actually show up for the poetry reading though?  I didn't think high school students would bo so interested in hearing poetry.  Which poems did you read?  Any famous ones that we would know about?

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

Yeah, people were into it :)  We read some of the poems on my page.  And I read this amazing poem by saraji umm zaid that everyone loved (especially the non-Muslims girls):

Mujahida

From the day Khadija asked Muhammad (sallalahu aleyhi wa salaam)

To marry her,

To the night she convinced

her husband that the revelation was more

than mere hallucination,

till the second she and Barakah became

the first believers,

I have been more than you imagined.

From the time A’isha stood firm against slander,

from the moment she held her dying husband,

till the time when she was sought after for her knowledge,

I have been more than you imagined.

From the flight to Medina to now,

from the triumph at Mecca to

the triumph of more than a billion,

in fourteen hundred and twenty years,

I have always been more than that.

I have never been so easy for you to figure out.

I am the Bosnian woman,

raped and beaten by

Serbian soldiers as

my husband is forced to look on,

and the world turns away.

The blood that runs from the bodies of

Algerian women

runs from me,

and stains the ground for all the world to see.

I am the woman on a Baghdad street corner,

begging journalists for a can of milk

so that I can feed my starving child.

I am the mother in Palestine,

mourning her eight year old son,

shot in the head by a soldier’s rubber bullet.

I am the Egyptian daughter

struggling to survive in a Cairo slum,

as the government lines its pockets with foreign aid money,

and the desert dust rises to choke the young.

I am the Indonesian woman

who makes $2 a day

sewing basketball sneakers for the NBA,

while restlessness burns the country around me.

I am the Iranian student,

sporting jeans and Mickey Mouse tee shirts

under my black chador, laughing and loving,

still recovering from an eight year war that cost the lives of many men.

I am the sister, wife, daughter, and mother to 500 million men.

I am all of my 500 million sisters,

and they are me.

I have always been more

than a threat

or a symbol of hatred and oppression.

I have always been more than

a terrorist’s helpmate.

I have always been more than

a veil or a scarf.

I have always been more than

one wife of many.

I have always been more than

a green card special.

In all of these myths,

I have always been voiceless,

when the truth is so much

louder.

I have never been that easy for you to

pin down,

yet I have never been the mystery that

you have created for me.

I am the warrior daughter of Khadija, A’isha,

Maryam, and Sara.

I am the mother of prophets,

the wife of khalifas,

the sister of shaheed.

I am the woman who wakes at dawn to face

Mecca in prayer,

bowing in submission only to The All Knowing.

I am fi jihad,

fighting daily to maintain

iman and identity,

to open the shut eyes of the world.

I am the woman who raises her voice

among men

to shout:

Takbeer!

Allahu Akbar!
