On Wednesday, February 28, American Muslims for Jerusalem (AMJ) lead a
coalition of advocacy organizations in a press conference calling for a
worldwide boycott of cosmetics giant Estée Lauder. That announcement was
prompted by Estée Lauder International Chairman Ronald Lauder?s
activities
in support of Israeli right-wing extremists.

Estee Lauders products include: Estee Lauder line of perfume and
make-up,
Aramis,  Clinique, Aveda, DKNY and Tommy Hilfegere toiletries products.
Estee Lauder also owns several lines of hair and skin care products and
shops such as M.A.C. and Origins.

Ronald Lauder is the Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organizations and President of the Jewish National Fund
(JNF).  JNF is a quasi-government agency whose main function is to
legitimize Israeli?s theft of Palestinian land.

In January, Lauder was the key speaker from the US at a rally in
Jerusalem,
organized by right wing Israeli politician Natan Sharansky. The rally
was
organized to oppose the mere consideration of Jerusalem as a negotiation
item. Lauder addressed 300,000 Israeli extremists at the gates of Haram
Al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary, one of Islam?s three holiest sites).
Some of
the protesters tried to break into the holy site.

Khalid Turaani, AMJ?s Executive Director said ?this boycott of Estee
Lauder
will send a clear message that people of conscience refuse to do
business
with corporations supporting Israeli apartheid policies which violate
internationally-recognized human rights?.

In 1993, Lauder co-founded a think tank called the Shalem Center with
Yoram
Hazony, a former Netanyahu aid. The Israeli Education Ministry has said
the
center is ?a research institute whose leanings are extreme right-wing
and
even fascistic.? Hebrew University professor Yisrael Bartal describes
Hazony
as a right-wing extremist. A columnist for the Israeli newspaper
Ha'aretz
(9/14/2000) wrote that Hazony is a sympathizer of the slain radical
Jewish
leader Meir Kahane, who called for the expulsion of all Arabs from
Israel.
The goal of Hazony, wrote the columnist, is to find new ways of
?breathing
life into Kahane's racist, totalitarian, intolerant ideology.?

Ronald Lauder?s Jerusalem-rally speech came at a time when the Israeli
government was waging a campaign of siege and starvation against the
entire
Palestinian population. While Mr. Lauder supports some legitimate
charitable
causes in the US, he shows his true colors when abroad by supporting
fanatic
causes that seek to uproot an entire population from its native land.
Lauder is also opposed to permitting Palestinian refugees to return to
their
homes. ?For Israel to allow these people to return would be national
suicide,? he said in a statement last September. In contrast, the UN
General
Assembly has demanded that Israel allow the Palestinian refugees to
return
since 1948. "Lauder?s opposition to the return of Palestinian refugees
in
order to maintain the pure-Jewish identity of Israel is nothing short of
apartheid at its worst" said Turaani.

I have a problem with boycotts.  Where do you draw the line ? I mean in my company, the VP of Enginering is Israeli.  So should I boycott my own company ?

If you are look at practically any consumer good, chances are there's a connection to Isreal or some other entity causing hardship for muslims.  Hell, we live in the US!  And we know what the misery they're causing to Iraq !!!

Myself, I boycott it if it says Made in Isreal or Made in India, otherwise I don't worry.

no commotion, no result

i personally boycott "made in israel" goods myself..as regarding to your work situation etc..well i think some things you can't help...but then again, it depends on what you believe in....

bro bear..didn't we have a discussion like this on islamica? i forgot what i wrote..but i remem writing something on this very issue? ;) that israeli business person you brought up?

Dah, I vaguely remember it.  Remember that Burger King boycott?  It worked, and so did the Nike boycott.  But Humble Muslim brings up an interesting point.  I think the important thing is to make people aware that we have a voice, and we need to be taken seriously.

You know, I haven't seen anything made in Israel, where do you guys shop?

salaams,
exactamundo, bro bear.

lol you know...you'd be surprised what sort of products are carried at your local muslim/persian/arab/halal store... ;)

besides that...well...COSTCO has those hebrew national franks...that proudly boasts of it's jewish/israeli heritage.. :P in hebrew..but i do think they are based in the States...(IL to be exact..if memory serves me right..)

obvious jewish prozionist grps..besides being "israeli" are on my black list to boycott..isn't ben & jerry's a jewish grp too? don't remem what's their stance (whether pro zionist or not)...i know there was an issue..with having one of their stores at a certain place in pali..not sure if it was in jerusalem or some other city...and i dont' remem if they decided to close it down or to keep it running...i THINK they closed it down...but it's been so long..n i don't frequent the place..i don't think it's as popular here as elsewhere..?

hmmm..where else have i seen israeli products...i think some at the deptmt stores...but i can't remember exactly...however, there are quite a few products at this one local persian halal store...makes u wonder, eh.. :)

i personally think if you know of a company that's prozionist..(or has a certain poli take to what you do not agree with) you can boycott it and make your stance known..if we stop supporting, it'll work..but only if it's a collective effect..we could support other companies instead...or make our own.. :) depends on what products..and if they're not necessary..but..still...if you believe in something...then you do it... :) "when there's a will, there's a way"
wa salaams.

p.s. not only that..but remember bro bear...i put up what khalid turaani said at a lecture re the CNN website? to recapitulate,  there were so many complaints, that they had called him up requesting him to put a stop or hold on those complaining..he said he couldnt do anything about it..unless if they changed their stance..(re recognizing or stating jerusalem as israel's capital)...CNN finally conceded and retracted their statement..masha'allah.. :) boycotts and complaints work as long as they're powerful..which means everyone or a strong majority has to be involved..when's the next revolution? :)

Savanaah, I think almost EVERY company out there has SOME zionist connection!!

Made In Isreal stuff : some kosher food, certain fruits, and chocolate candy money.  (Don't know why, but I had to take some back from my kids once).

BTW, I DO eat Hebrew National stuff.

Muslim Americans in Face-Off with Cosmetic Giant

By iviews.com staff report

Some of America's most vocal and active Muslims organizations have called for a boycott of cosmetics giant Estée Lauder for what they say is one company board member's extremist pro-Israel political activism.

Prompted by the appearance of Estée Lauder Board Member Ronald Lauder at a "One Jerusalem Rally" in January, four prominent Muslim American organizations announced the boycott call today at a news conference in Washington.

Lauder is the son of company founder Estée Lauder.

Organizers of the rally claim Jerusalem as the united capital of Israel, saying the state of Israel "has upheld its moral and ethical obligations to the people of the world and has earned the right to retain sovereignty over all of Jerusalem".

American Muslims for Jerusalem Executive Director Khalid Turaani said they were alerted to Lauder's activities after he was publicly admonished by other Jewish American organizations for his participation in the event.

Members of his own organization, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, criticized him for his appearance, even though Lauder said he was attending as a private citizen.

The executive director of Mercaz USA, Rabbi Rober Golub, said Lauder's actions were embarrassing.

"The conference should not have been involved in what was a pointedly political rally designed to embarrass the government and oppose the current prime minister," said Golub in a January interview with the Jerusalem Post.

Estée Lauder spokespeople declined repeated requests for an interview.

Malcolm I. Hoenlein, executive vice chairman of the conference of presidents told the New York Times he expected the boycott to fail and could even backfire by inviting such actions against companies owned by Muslim Americans.

"To try and import the Middle East conflict here is absurd," he told the New York paper.

But Turaani disputes Hoenlein's claims.

"We didn't begin with failure in mind," he said. "There's a lot of passion in the Arab and Muslim world to stop (Israel's) seize and starvation campaign."

Last year, Europe, the Middle East and Africa represented 26 percent of Estée Lauder net sales. The Asia/Pacific region represented additional 13 percent of net sales.

Turaani hinted at enlisting help from some other major organizations, such as the Arab League, which became involved in the current boycott of Burger King for its establishment of a restaurant in an illegal Jewish settlement in the Occupied Territories.

According to company statistics, Estée Lauder controls nearly 50 percent of the makeup market in the U.S. The company's products are sold in more than 120 countries and territories under brand names such as Estée Lauder, Aramis, Clinique, Prescriptives, Origins, M?A?C, La Mer, Bobbi Brown essentials, Tommy Hilfiger, jane, Donna Karan, Aveda, Stila, Jo Malone and Bumble and bumble.

AMJ's campaign is also backed by the American Muslim Council, the Muslim Public Affairs Council, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Turaani says AMJ led a successful boycott against the Disney Company when their millennium display at a theme park marked Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Disney immediately removed all references to Jerusalem as the capital.
