Nuray Canan Bezirgan was sentenced to 6 months in jail for attempting to
appear in Hijab in the final examination at Istanbul University's health
services school.

Charged, under the Turkish criminal code, for "preventing education and
training," Bezirgan explained, "I wear my head-scarf not to prevent
education and training but because it is an order of Allah stated in the
Quran."

After her conviction, Bezirgan, who came to the trial with her 10-month
baby, said that her arm was broken when the police used excessive force
while dragging her out of the examination hall. Despite her injury, she
was kept overnight in jail without medical attention.
