suggestions?

alsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu

at my university, it is becoming incresingly apparent that we will have to deal with the 'pride centre' (alternative lifestyle people) sooner or later..in fact,  they have already approached the msa to do an event with them but alhamdulillah it didn't happen becaue of lack of interest -so we didn't have to deal with it

insha'Allah we will contact msa-natl for input but the msa prez at my uni asked me to post something here in hopes of more ideas...he basically was wondering what could we do to be proactive in regards to this group? ..instead of reactive in the future...he doesn't want to have to deal with any situation as it happens...and he wants to be ready to deal with any "gay muslims"(staghfor Allah)-i've heard its a problem lately

he wants to find a way to explain our position against them without eliciting a negatve response - they are an influencial group on campus unforunately - we have to be careful with what we say to them

so pls if u have any ideas let me know

jazakum Allahu khayran

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

I think firstly you should have someone knowledgeable come in and speak to the MSA about homosexuality and Islam's take on it.  If this is something that might be controversial in your MSA, maybe you can have a talk on marriage or male/female relationships and mention this subject within it.

Definitely this person should address Islam's viewpoint on homosexuality, why it is not accepted and some of the wisdom behind this.  It's not sufficient just to say that it is "dirty" etc because the society we live in today is doing whatever it can to make it seem normal, clean, and decent.  In my child psych class today we learned about a book for 4-5 year olds called "Daddy's Roommate"... SubhanAllah.. so it's not sufficent just to tell people that it's something dirty or unnatural because this society indoctrinates people with an acceptance of homosexuality from a very young age.  Even us as Muslims are susceptible to it.  It's important to make sure the speaker does more than just gay-bash, but to address intellectually and rationally why Islam prohibits this and why it is wrong.  It might be beneficial to mention how the so called "gay gene" is totally unsubstantiated, as our resident scientist br. Arsalan can tell you.

Again, the purpose of such a lecture is not to instill hatred in people for homosexuals, it is to inform people as to why homosexuality is wrong and why Islam prohibits it.

I thijk the first step is educating people within your MSA, I think that will help prevent situations that may happen in the future that you are worried about.

I don't think it's a good idea to go head to head with the "Pride centre", they sound like a formidable group on campus with a lot of influence, and it's important that the actions the MSA take do not reflect poorly on Islam... which may happen if you, say, stage a protest outside their building or whatever, and you have people saying things like "throw them off a cliff" etc..

Uhh.. yeah, that's all I can think of.  The only reason I responded was because no one else has, I doubt my answers were beneficial to you.  But I think it's important to focus on Muslims before we start to worry about non-Muslims.. I remember someone saying that if the world is like the Titanic going down, you should help those on life boats, those who want to be saved, before you go to those who want to drown or who are dancing with their eyes shut on the sinking ship..

so look out for your brothers and sisters, support them, help them, because we're all struggling and all of us encounter different tests and difficulties in life.. do what you can and inshaAllah Allah will make your efforts easy on you and successful.

wAllahu 'alam

wasalaam.

Assalamu Alaikum,

If you want to break it down to them easily without offending anyone, just tell them the truth. Avoiding telling them the truth will offend them more. Of course you can't tell them truth by yelling at them or doing something to offend them. Just sit down with them and explain to them that in our Din, we cannot have an alternative lifestyle and it is not allowed for us to be gay/lesbian. If they don't undertand or don't want to understand what you say to them, just tell them that that's the way it is. It is prohibited by Allah and nothing that Allah says can be passed by.
Good luck in letting them know.

Salam
