Re:    The Islamic Conference For Human Rights and Responsibility
When:  Saturday, March 17, 2001
Where: Islamic Education Center
      7917 Montrose Rd., Potomac, Md. 20854

   From its inception in 1996, The Peace And Justice Foundation has served
both as an education and advocacy organization around issues of human rights.
In accordance with its official mandate - "To promote and encourage public
interest in peace and justice in the United States and throughout the world,
so that the highest standards of achievement, instruction and criticism shall
prevail" - The Peace And Justice Foundation, in association with Muslim
Community School, will sponsor a thought provoking conference on Saturday,
March 17th, titled: The Islamic Conference For Human Rights and
Responsibility.   At the heart of this conference will be the following
panels:

1) Secret Evidence: More than a mere abstraction;
2) The Case of Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin: a litmus test for Muslims in
America;
3) Can Muslim Involvement in the US Political Process Advance the cause of
Human Rights?

   The voice of indigenous Muslims will predominate this conference. Muslims
born and raised in the US (and especially those who have had to struggle
through America's racial and class strictures), have a unique perspective
that is too often silent or marginalized in the numerous Islamic conferences
that take place in America each year. Such marginalization exacts a heavy
toll. By denying the gifts of all her sons and daughters, the full blossoming
of Islamic Movement in the US winds up being inhibited, and thus, the March
17th conference represents a humble step toward an attempt to help remedy
this deficiency. Among the presenters for this timely initiative will be:

* Sr. Aisha Al-Adawiya, Director of Women In Islam, and member of The
Malcolm X Museum Board in New York City;
* Sr. Ashira Na'im, Secretary General of Jamaat Al-Muslimeen;
* Ed Brown, blood brother of Imam Jamil A. Al-Amin (formerly H. Rap Brown);
* Dr. Ihsan Bagby, administrator at Shaw University in Raleigh, NC & CAIR
Board Member;
* Br. Essa Smith (moderator), member of the National Jamaat (under Imam
Jamil);
* Imam Talib Abdur-Rashid, Mosque of the Islamic Brotherhood & Amir of the
Justice Committee of New York City's Majlis Ashura;
* Imam Abdul Alim Musa, Masjid Al-Islam, Washington, DC;
* Br. Jihad Abdul-Mumit, writer, activist and former political prisoner;
* Br. Mahdi Bray (moderator), Chair of Coordinating Council of Muslim
Organizations (WDC);
* Br. Nasser Ahmed, former secret evidence detainee;
* Dr. Anwar Haddam, Algerian political leader and former secret evidence
detainee;
* Dr. Ali Karim, former secret evidence detainee;

   We wanted to have Dr. Mazen Al-Najjar on the program (another secret
evidence detainee), but he has just informed us that he has a commitment on
the same day in the Tampa area. There is a strong possibility, however, that
we may have a surprise guest (also connected with secret evidence) to take
Mazen's place, insha'Allah. We also expect to have a representative from the
Muslim American Society (MAS) on the program; and Imam Siraj Wahhaj will give
the keynote address on: "The Challenges Facing Muslims In North America."
   In addition to the education and motivation purposes of this upcoming
event, The Islamic Conference For Human Rights and Responsibility is also
intended to be a much needed fundraiser for The Peace And Justice Foundation
and Muslim Community School. For this reason, we are requesting that
participants be prepared to make a $5.00 donation at the door. (However, no
one unable to meet this request will be turned away.)

Re: The Muslim Community School
   MCS is a full time, "non-sectarian, multi-cultural & multi-ethnic Islamic
School," established in 1984 and certified in 1988. One of the unique
features of MCS is its commitment to complete and balanced instruction for its students. In
addition to Islam-based instruction, and the standard academic curricula, MCS
also strives to make its students politically aware of the major issues of
the day (impacting the Muslim and non-Muslim community). To acquire
additional info on MCS and/or the upcoming Islamic Conference For Human
Rights and Responsibility (including directions to the Islamic Education
Center), go to: www.mcspto.org/conference.htm

   A final note. While many of you receiving this email communiqué' in
different parts of the country, will not be able to attend the upcoming
conference, I'm sure that most will want to contribute in some way to the
efforts being made. For those who would like to contribute directly to the
work of MCS, information is available on the aforementioned website. For
those who would like to contribute directly to the work of The Peace And
Justice Foundation, you may do so at the following:
