Womens Rights In Islam... Please Help

Asalam Alaikum Brothers and Sisters.

I am going to be performing a speech in the next couple of weeks about the true role and rights of women in the Islamic faith. This came about because the class I take (public speaking) is primarily made up of women (about 90%), my professor and I were discussing my recent conversion to Islam and it sparked a debate among the women in the class and myself about how the Muslim faith is very oppressive to women and that a woman in an Islamic country has no rights and cannot do what she wants.

Being that I am rather new to being a Muslim I felt I should bow out of the debate, and instead use one of my speeches to dedicate it to informing the class about Islam and the role of women therein.

I need some help in getting a womans view of thier role in life. From the wearing of the hijab to basic functions within the community (ie shopping and being out in public).

I have been able to gather much information from the net, but I would like to have real life responses to things, to make my speech have more impact to the women in my class. I am already using my fiance and her roll in Saudi Arabia as a college student. But I would like a broader base than just one woman.

Any help would be appreciated.

Wassalam,
Kiwaku

Asalaamu aleikoum,

Boy have you come to the right place.  This city is home to many sisters who are as lucid and effusive in their communication as they are intelligent and steadfast in their deen.

Insha' Allah they will give you a hand to two.

Let us know how you get on.

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

Kiwaku can you give us specific topics to address?  I could probably write a book on what a Muslim woman's life is like :)

wasalaam.

Salaam

This raises the important question ...do muslim women feel they have anything in common with kaffir females who's husbands are busy blowing up their kids ?
