What is the definition of a woman's awrah in front of other women?  I have heard some say navel to knees and others say it is roughly from collarbones to knees (meaning you are allowed to expose arms, lower legs).  If anyone could please provide some ayats from the Qur'an or ahadith as proof, it would help a lot! I'm a medical student, and part of our education is to practice performing physical exams on each other. I have a female partner and we would be in a private room, so I need to know how much i can expose!! thanks :)

Salam'alaykum
"And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and
guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and
ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should
draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to
their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons,
their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their
sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands
possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have
no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their
feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. "
The majority of scholars say that "their women" refer to the muslim
women and that we're not allowed to show ourselves without hijab in front
of non-muslim women.  However, in your case, maybe the ruling would be
the same as when we need to see a doctor?  I have no idea and I think
the best thing for you is to ask a qualified imam.

there is a difference of opinion on the muslim/non-muslim woman thing. there is also a difference of opinion on the awrah of women to women, like you said some say navel to the knees (ie you can breasfeed your child in front of other women), some say a little more like from the tops of the arms to something. as for doctors etc... i would assume this is a completely different situation and has a fiqh of it's own. it's best if you consult someone knowledgable you trust and ask these things of them since there is more than one opinion.
