| slm Its now Wednesday. :) The selection selected for the translation contest, is one of Abu Khaled's posts. Don't post your answers here, just send your answer in to Meraj, he'll start a new thread and post up the results on Saturday? (unless you guys want the contest to end earlier ??? ). I realize this is an extremely difficult challenge, be creative if you don't know, the important thing is to convey the meaning of the message. When these are graded they should be graded on originality, translation abilities, creativity. Ready? Begin. :) TRANSLATE THIS AS BEST AS YOU CAN: Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Raheem Dear Brothers & Sisters, Assalam alaikum wa rahmatullah. For a long time, I too thought that the only question mark above TV was the issue of content. And if this was the only issue, then perhaps one could argue for the benefits in the presence of control. However, some research led me to realise that this is only part of the picture (pardon the pun), and that it is not only the content of TV that needs to be considered, but also the very technology itself. This is more true with respect to children, who by their nature are in a developmental stage. Whosoever is a parent cannot afford to overlook the damage the *technology* of the TV is doing to their children. I would recommend, as a startpoint, every parent to read the following book, from which this is the blurb: "In Strangers in Our Homes: TV and Our Children’s Minds, Dr. Susan R. Johnson writes about the harmful effects of television on young children’s mental and emotional development. Dr. Johnson is a paediatrician and a mother who noticed behavioral changes in children who watched television. In this paper, she explains how watching TV affects the brain and its development. In addition, this booklet contains an introduction to Dr. Johnson’s paper by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf as well as his own insightful paper, The Trojan TV: Enemies in Our Homes, which asks us to take a critical look at television and the effects it has on our society." Having read this book you will begin to learn how the very *process* of watching TV - REGARDLESS OF CONTENT - is *physically* handicapping your child's developing faculties, and to an extent you too. As a Muslim parent, you need to be worried, for your child is an amanah [trust] bestowed upon you by Allah (SubHana Wa Ta`ala ), and if you harm him/her, you will be called to account. Your decisions about what you allow your children to watch/don't watch should no longer be governed by the naďve thinking that it is *just* an issue of *what* they see. No. The very act of *watching* is hampering their development, even if it is not noticeably apparent to you. The process of *optimisation* with respect to how your child develops is eroded by TV, and for that, it is not the child who will be questioned, but the parent, for the child does not possess the cognitive capacity to know any better, or the maturity and intellect to be accountable. You do. Thus you will be held responsible by Allah (SubHana Wa Ta`ala ). And so, as one who is minding this child as an amanah from your Lord (SubHana Wa Ta`ala ), you cannot afford to remain ignorant about this contemporary research, for remember, the phenomena of TV has not been around for centuries. Only now are some of the side-effects being recognised, as research is being undertaken, observations made and correlations noted. Once you appreciate how this technology functions, and it's detrimental impact upon a child (and even adults too), then - assuming some elemental familiarity with usul and fiqh - you realise that this *may* fall under the area known as mafsadah [harm] to the self, thereby giving a basis to contemporary Shuyukh to *possibly* issue fatawa prohibiting this medium, as Islamically it is haram to harm oneself, and one's health, or those in one's care. If it is proven that such mafsadah is a *definite* and unavoidable consequence to a child (or adult) of watching TV, then the case for avoiding this activity gains ground. Compound this by knowing that such harm is occurring due to a cause which isn't even necessary in one's life, and the case begins to become stronger and stronger. Maybe even watertight, wallahau ta'ala a'lam. Please note, I am NOT issuing a hukm or fatwa here, or even basing my words on one, merely giving - insha'Allah - you some serious pause for thought. Take this seriously, and at the least, combat your complacency - if you have it towards the issue - and investigate further. For the shrugging of those shoulders will provide no defence in the akhira. We ask Allah ta'ala to give us the strength to act away from our nafs [lower self], and ahwal [desires]. LOL :) this is sad..i hype this soo much, and i can't even participate! i think we should change that rule :) ma'salaam ;-D |

| Man, this is tough. I tried doing it in Urdu (my first, never-forgotten language), and even that was tough! Forget French!!! P.S. I'll do it in French if someone else does ... |

| Asalaam u alaikum Two quick suggestions regarding translation 1. Article shouldn’t be Islamic or any part of it. Caz some brothers and sisters are not very good at Urdu, they might translate wrongly changing meanings or making fun of it. 2. The article you have posted for translation is too long, to keep more interest 6 or 7 lines are enough. Wasalaam u alaikum Tarar |

| slm That was one of Abu Khaled's shortest posts, ok, I guess it might be a bit challenging for some and lengthy, and not enough participation, so I guess we'll go with something shorter, sorry Abu Khaled. I wanted to do some sort of poem or story. Ok, how about this from the Round robin section: TRANSLATE THIS AND write a reply to it in the language you chose to translate. Post your answers in the translation contest answers folder located in the Bebsi section, no need to send it to Meraj. Insha'Allah no one cheats. :) ------------------------------------------ assalaamu alaikum I can't believe you Americans are so much into poetry. And poetry in English?? English is probably the most unemotional language in the world! You can rarely find a poem in this language that is good for its entire length (unless its something like 4 lines). Most of em die after about 8 lines - just like Se7en's did. Man there is more poetry in my programming! Kashif Wa Salaam |

| salaams, umm..like i'm stressing out regarding Sn1, Sn2, E1, E2 reactions and the anatomy of a shark..while you all are having FUN?? haram alaykum! :P jk ok...soooo...all we have to do is translate the above kashif passage into any language even if we can't translate it well in that lang? and we post up our results in the answers section?? yeah? is this still going on like can i participate or is it too late? wa salaams... btw..these posts are kinda hard to translate, dude.. |
