The 2-volume set Companions of the Prophet by AbdulWahid Hamid is excellent!

Here is a URL from where you can buy it:

http://store.yahoo.com/islamicbookstore-com/b2587.html

OR you can read them online at:

as-Salaamu 'Alaykum,
The MSA of the University of Delaware also has some books on-line about the khulafaa rashideen i.e. the 4 rightly guided Caliphs.  http://udel.edu/stu-org/msaud under Islamic Info or something like that.

"suwar min hayah as-sahaba" by Abdur-Rahman iffat al-basha is a good read for beginners.  It has explanatory footnotes on difficult words as well !

Zubaid Kazmi:

Do you go to the U of D?!?!? Up until about 5 months ago I lived and worked around there!

Adam:

What is the IIASA? Maybe I can contact them about the books.

Jazakullah!

as-Salaamu 'Alaykum,
Br. Daud, I used to live in Delaware up until June.  I lived in Wilmington and went to the Masjid in Newark.
But now I'm all the way in Dallas, Texas where the summers are hot and the winters are chillin'.

Take care,

Zubaid Kazmi

IIASA = Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in America http://www.iiasa.org/

I checked their website and the biography books are not listed in their distribution list. Maybe you can send them an email and ask. Amazon.com has the books listed but they are out of print.

Wasalaam.

"Men Around the Messenger" by Khalid Muhammad Khalid is another good book.  One brother has been typing up the whole book and sending out in bits and pieces to me in email.  I can put up some of the information on some of the companions (ra) from that book if you want?
